Phone call offering to replace my "old modem"

So I'm an old sea-salt a bell. worked for them too.

Grandfathered sympatico hse plan, no it's not bell internet... grandfathered ld bundle (which went up from $5 a month to $7.50 a month this month)...

Got a phone call offering me a "new modem" since my "old modem is really old, out dated and doesn't meet todays needs".

Sales pitch, yes.

So, I have a 5200, first gen.

Is this another try to get me onto their sucky router?

I'll lay odds that if you were on an "unlimited plan" before, y ou're not any more!

I didn't get it. I told them that I didn't want a new modem and that my current one was perfectly good for my needs.

But I was curious what it was... I hadn't heard of any thing like the famous Nortel Swap going on.

So same old joy eh?

I asked in the Direct forum a few months ago if my Speedtouch Home needed to be replaced, and the answer I got was no. So if that oldie is still golden, then so is your 5200.

I'm still sporting a 5200 and no phone call yet.

Before that I had a Speedstream 5360 until lightning blew it up.

And before that, the venerable Nortel!

More like pay more - get lessER.
Was this the "wireless home networking modem" or words to that effect? If so, as others have said, had you gone for it you would have been placed on a capped plan and shelled out ~80 bucks for rental modem.
I have the all black 5200 (e242 if I recall) - it works to at least the 5000/800 profile. Anyone else notice how annoyingly loud (high-pitched squeal) it is?

I have the first gen 5200, I had the 5360 but got rid of it for the 5200 when I worked for bell since I knew some of the old secrets about it.

No they were just saying my modem was old and not able to handle the new upgrades in my neighborhood.

The lady on the phone seemed shocked when I started laughing.

I'd ditch it...use ethernet instead.

You're thinking of the Speedtouch USB - the Speedtouch Home is ethernet only.

Maybe they're trying to offer you ADSL2, I know the first gen 5200 doesn't support it.

I did receive a similar call several months ago. Declined for exactly the reasons specified here -- I was worried I'd be moved off of my grandfathered unlimited plan.

I'm still using a 5360 on a 5000/800 profile and it works fine. Are these "old secrets" somethtng that I should be concerned about?

Tks
