Kylemaul : Good to see I'm not the only one still using this venerable diehard of a router. :D
I just changed out my ActionTech (FiOS) and went back to "Ole Blue".
With AT, was getting 10/1.8---with Ole Blue getting 5.75/1.6.
And I'm sticking with my Linksys for a few reasons:
1) Configurability. Saying the AT was a pain in the ass to configure may be the grossest understatement I'll ever make.
2) Latency. Typical latency to speedtest.net with the AT was 125-150ms to the recommended server. With Ole Blue, down to 100ms.
3) Other than latency, the speed (throughput) difference is not that important to me. And the LAN throughput on Ole Blue rocks.
Just for kicks, I tried the MTU suggestion. Lowered my throughput, so it's back to 1500.

edit: Anyone here know why switching the IP from 192.168.x.x to 10.10.x.x would make a difference? Would it depend on the revision of BEFSR41 that you have?

Bobec : I have 3 options to consider, and want to come to a resolution today so that I can start enjoying 12mb service. The solution needs to support 12mb throughput for 3 PC's (2-XP and 1-Vista) and a PS3 (for online gaming).

Choices appear to be:

1. Windstream offers a 2701hg 2-wire solution. The concern here is that I've read a ton of posts in the 2-Wire Forum that lead me to believe that the 2701hg has an 'iffy' reputation and may be problematic. I'm a bit cautious about this as a solution.

2. I understand from reading the documentation that the speedstream 4200 modem is also capable of performing router services. It has been suggested that I could simply swap my current Linksys befsr41 ver. 2 router for a simple switch; however, I don't know for sure what features I'd be giving up with this configuration. Being able to swap out the current router for a switch is attractive from a simplicity perspective and I already have a new switch in hand.

3. I'm 100% OK with buying a new router, so cost isn't an issue. I'm most interested in getting great performance without ever needing to think about my router. I've had a good experience with my current Linksys product, so I'm inclined to buy another one, and it will NOT be used in wireless mode today. Having the capacity to handle future increased DSL speeds beyond 12mb is a consideration, since I'd like to get at least a few years service out of what I buy. Question is: which Linksys router to buy???

As always, all feedback and suggestions are appreciated.
--
Are we having fun yet?

BEFSR41 ver. 2 and 12mb DSL Question

Bobec : Background for my questions:

3 PC's and a PS3 connected via a (wired) BEFSR41 ver.2 router into new Speedstream 4200 modem. 2 PC's running XP, one Vista. Had been on 6mb DSL for nearly 3 years without any speed issues. I was upgraded to 12mb DSL on Aug. 1. (Windstream=ISP). SNR post-12mb upgrade stays in the 13 range and atten is in the 13.5 range, so no problems there. During testing to try and determine why my speeds were not even close to 12mb, I noticed that tests done bypassing the router were in the 10mb range, while tests through the router were in the 5-6mb range. Went to Linksys, found a firmware update, installed the firmware update, and now I'm sitting at a firmware version of 1.46.02, dated Aug 03, 2004. Rebooted PC, modem, router and no change in speed noted when testing through the router.

Before I tried any additional testing, I had a live chat with a Cisco/Linksys tech. to see if there were any changes needed in the BEFSR41 needed to support 12mb. The CSR made some suggestions that I haven't yet done. Wanted to run them by the BBR experts first. She asked me to do the following adjustments, but again, I have not applied them yet:

1. In the Advanced tab, enable MTU settings and change them to 1300. She indicated that this would 'lower the packet collision' rate.

2. In Setup tab, go to the Block WAN Request, change from disable to enable.

3. In Setup again, change the LAN IP address to 10.10.1.1.

Thoughts/suggestions? I suspect that it may be time to get a new router....
--
Are we having fun yet?
