[Rant] Airlines safety (plane crash in Madrid)

Well with yesterday's last plane crash in Madrid, I am thinking of not flying for at least 5 years. i am tired of airlines and their bullshit. I am tired of them being sneaky, greedy and EVIL. These bastards only care about $$$. They can go to hell. They won't take my life as they did yesterday. For Christ's sake those people were leaving on a hard earned holiday!!!

They should put in their agendas saferty first and $$$ last. Don't they understand that every time a plane leaves the airport hundreds of lives are at stake?

Here're some comments about this tragic event:

The plane, bearing the orange, blue and white livery of Spain's second largest airline, had been due to leave the airport at 1pm. It began taxiing at 1.05pm but returned to the gate at 1.42pm before eventually taking off at 2.45pm. It was shortly before this that it was reportedly seen coming out of a maintenance shed.

Whay on earth did the bastards in charge of the operation allow the plane to take off? I can't believe it!

The plane involved was an MD-82 and was 20 yeas old. It had been in service with Spanair since 1993 and is one of 36 such models in their fleet.

MD-82s have been involved in several crashes in recent years.

This plane model is known to be of high risk but airlines still use them. WHY?

I think we all should take action and refuse to fly until all airlines decide to change their abusive and evil practices.

As a side note, here in Australia Virgin airlines has decide to implement a fee for hand luggage. This means that anything you take with you would be charged instead of the 7Kg allowance (like the rest of the airlines).

They must be freaking joking. They are laughing at the expense of their customers. They party and cash in while we die.

Solution to this problem:

Airlines should become public companies. Then safety would be put first.

Note: I won't die on a plane crash, for sure.

Your chances of get killed is more likely by a driver speeding dui and running red lights then by a plane crash.
So I guess you stop driving.

I find it interesting that you don't wish to fly even though traveling via auto has been and is still more dangerous. I don't know about Australia but here in the US most of the airlines are tacking on fee after fee but are still teetering on the edge of collapse so they are hardly partying and swimming in money. That said, many of the airlines here have terrible management and probably wouldn't be in such poor shape financially with competent management.

Though in hindsight this aircraft should not have attempted to fly, in their defense how many passengers would have cursed the airline and refused to ever fly it again had they canceled the flight due to maintenance issues and ruined their holiday plans? Airlines are the type of companies that unless everything is perfect people are quick curse them and refuse to ever do business with them again. If they say there are maintenance issues and the flight will be delayed/canceled, people accuse them of making excuses and complain about it. If the plane flies and something happens (as happened here), people complain and say that they should have delayed/canceled the flight until the issue was resolved. If they raise fares to cover their expenses and improve service, people complain. What are they supposed to do?

I'm not sure what your rant is about really.

So the plane was seen coming out of a maintenance shed? Do you want it to sit on the tarmac for rest? When your car comes out of the garage, is it more dangerous to drive?

North American carriers have also started charging for carry on luggage.

I'm not defending the airlines at all. But nationalising them is not the answer. If any industry needs nationalising, it would be the oil and gas industry. Then airlines wouldn't have to charge for carry ons. However, the world does not need more crown corporations.

The one thing they never touch: CxO's salaries and very lucrative "parachute packages"
looking at the airline industry, NONE of these people are worth these crazy salaries/benefit packages.

Actually, the MD-8x series has one of the best safety records in aviation. For instance: »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MD-80#Nota···ncidents

Of the listed 13 fatal crashes involving an MD-8x hull:

12 were due to pilot error, inadequate maintenance, or icing.

1 is pending investigation. (the recent crash in Spain)

High risk? As usual, the human factor is where the risk comes in.

Wait a second, Was not last year one of the safest years for air travel in the US? i mean, according to this:
»en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ac···aircraft

There was only one incident int he US and it was not even a full blown crash. And this year there is not even a mention of a U.S. carrier.

Just because it was in a MAINTENANCE shed means nothing as they have maintenance they have to perform on the planes. You are making a HUGE assumption that it had anything to do with the crash not to mention that this was a foreign airline - no reason to believe that anything has changed in the US for the worse. Especially since it is much safer than any other form of travel.

The plane was 15 years old as well - not 20:
"The plane was 15-years-old and passed its annual inspection last year, she said."
»news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080821/wl_···sh_dc_19

The US still have a good amount of old 737's still flying with no issues (and some of those would be 30+ years old). Properly maintained - they can fly for a LONG time.

Only because they learned from the mistakes that where made with the DC-9 series. Same AC, just different body numbers.

Considering the thousands of flights that take off and land safely every single day, I don't think the airlines record is all that bad. It just seems that way when the media hypes a crash and everyone thinks "it could have been me"....for about 30 seconds. I don't like to fly (and I tend to get air sick, which doesn't help), but I make myself do it by remembering that crashes are relatively rare.

Being in a car is many times more dangerous than being on a plane.

150 people dying in a one plane crashes sells more then 1500 people dying in individual car crashes

B-52s are even older. KC-135s are based on (but not identical to) the 707. Age alone is not much of a problem.

I know what you mean guys, but when I drive my car (I don't drive in anyone else's car no way, not even a cab) I am in control and so far so good, over 20 yrs driving.

However in a plane there is no chance if there is a human error, which is probably what happened in this case.

Maybe we should start making androids responsible for flying. Then errors would be reduced to 99.99%.

Cheers.

Riiiiiiight - no errors at all. Lets see - first time they tried to see if a plane could automatically take off with no human intervention - the plane crashed big time.

Sorry - I would much rather have a human in control for those problems that are unexpected and unforseen and relatively - unprogrammable.

Of course it does....and that's the problem. The media adds to the false impression (as evidenced by the OP) that air travel is inherently "unsafe" when that is not the case at all.

i bet more people will die on I-95 between Washinton DC and Boston then will die world wide on commercial airliners during a one year period.
