Sound absorbing materials in PC case?

anybody try this with any success? I would think placing anything sound absorbing in your case that wouldnt block airflow would be a pretty good idea.

I dont know maybe chime in if you think this is completely retarded.

or some ideas on key spots to place material. right off the bat im placing some above my power supply as its loosly hanging in my case(only screws on the outside) what if we lined as much of the case as we could with foam? to much heat?

you can buy kits that include differently cut mats with glue backing that you place wherever you can. And yes, they work pretty well.

consider this

Certainly they work well at dampening the sound, but they immediately block heat dissipation. You can certainly just wrap your PC in a nice blanket - the sounds will be muffled or even disappear - but the heat will accumulate damaging the components. It's always a trade-off between the two.

Consider tucking your PC back further behind the desk (though make sure you have enough airflow)

I don't think they make much impact to heat unless your airflow is bad to begin with. I did it on a sonata case and the temp sensitive fan, which was already spinning at minimal speed, did not increase. Just don't block the airflow, that is all.

cool then. I will look more into it. i didnt think it would make a big impact in heat trapping. so as long as there is airflow you should be fine.

Im using the black foam you get when buying motherboards, pc cards etc etc. should work out okay.

Thanks for the link - I glanced at it. Basically it's a 1 paragraph advertisement of »www.acousticpc.com/noise_reduction.html material ($50 for 3 sheets) that can be applied to quiet your PC sounds.

Re: Sound absorbing materials in PC case?

Hi Craig!

I just bought a new PC this August. It was meant to be a silent PC. It contains a specially silent power supply, a passively cooled graphics card aso. These were the components I chose myself. Additionally the guys at the PC shop also recommended me some sort of sound-absorbing "mats". They didn't cost the world, but being honest, I can't really say that they did any furhter improvments at all... I do not now much about this topic but I guess I will save the 20 pounds for something more useful next time. At least it doesn't influence the PC's temperature at all...

Hope I could help you,
Carla
