I just bought a new PC this August. It was meant to be a silent PC. It contains a specially silent power supply, a passively cooled graphics card aso. These were the components I chose myself. Additionally the guys at the PC shop also recommended me some sort of sound-absorbing "mats". They didn't cost the world, but being honest, I can't really say that they did any furhter improvments at all... I do not now much about this topic but I guess I will save the 20 pounds for something more useful next time. At least it doesn't influence the PC's temperature at all...

Thanks for the link - I glanced at it. Basically it's a 1 paragraph advertisement of »www.acousticpc.com/noise_reduction.html material ($50 for 3 sheets) that can be applied to quiet your PC sounds.

You can certainly just wrap your PC in a nice blanket - the sounds will be muffled or even disappear - but the heat will accumulate damaging the components. It's always a trade-off between the two.

Consider tucking your PC back further behind the desk (though make sure you have enough airflow) :)
