Re: What is ISDN??

128k isdn for 60 is great, thats about what was payed back when I had a 90k dialup connection using 2 bonded lines. of course now I get 5M for 45 with a real high speed provider, but when your alternative is 45k dialup doubling it to 90 for double the cost is pretty cool.

I have had Direcway/Hughes for years. I've had trouble with them some until the latest system DW7000. It is blazing fast 1 to 1.5 kbps down most of the time- Kath159

Wow! Where are you located? I should feel lucky as I'm paying less then $46 / month for my ISDN Line through Bellsouth/ATT. Also, I'm only paying $9.95 / month for 128K dual channel ISP connection through localnet. So for $60 a month I get decent thruput. The only other option I have is satellite as they don't even know how to spell DSL where I live nor do I have access to cable.

AT&T also has a decent description here too:

Also, be weary that ISDN can be complicated to configure on the user-end. Reading many posts indicates that users either are successful in setting it up or have trouble getting their equipment configured properly.

Most people use a Terminal Adaptor (TA) / modem or a small router, i.e. Cisco 804

I called AT&T on ISDN and it was approx $132.45/month for the line (needed a central office extension since I'm in the sticks) and then figure $20-40.00 for the ISP. You will also need to find an ISP that supports channel-bonding so you can bind the two 64k channels into one 128k channel. AT&T setup fee was for year contract $125.00 and waived if you sign-up for a two year contract. $140.00 for indoor wiring.

A monthly ballpark of $170.00 for 128k up/down is awfully expensive for the bandwidth - ; not sure if I can stomach that yet... still waiting for a wireless alternative.

From the FAQ.

Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) is a digital telephone connection that provides two digital phone lines capable of carrying voice, data, or a combination of the two. Each digital channel can support 64kbps (56kbps on some systems) of bi-directional data and the two channels of an ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) line can be combined together to produce speeds of up to 128kbps.

ISDN phone lines are all digital which results in cleaner, error-free, and reliable data transmission. Analog phone lines used by modems are subject to data errors caused by line noise and other numerous transmission interruptions. An ISDN modem will dial and connect much faster than an analog modem. Many times it can dial, connect, be authenticated and online in less than 5 seconds.
