| Software Raid
It seems to me there is a discussion on Raid here that is getting off-topic.
My mobo, but also don't leave out other boards as it is becoming a standard feature it seems.
I'm in the mood for playing a bit further with my mobo as I use software raid. I have a Silicon Sata/Raid connection as well as the onboard Sata/Raid, so here's a few questions so we can really get dirty over something I'm learning that others might like to read for themselves while I have the time to look/ask/try/implement, not necessary in that order.
1. Would it be worth even hooking up my spare drive to the seperate connection using a seperate driver? 2. Advantages/disadvantages of using a board like this? 3. Any suggestions on the best way to set it up to get the most out of it. Prefer without a hardware card because of the extra dollars, but still interested in the pro's and con's to help with where I go in the future though. 4. Did I miss something in my questions that may be a hinderence or help in setting up a box using a board like this?

| No one?
Reason I asked was because of the following.
My mobo detects a single sata as SCSI before the raid array which has to date affected any attempt at imaging my O/S etc and was curious if the Silicon sata/raid connection could be brought into play to help fix this issue. Would playing with a jumper on the third HDD fix this.
Because software raid is my first attempt at going Raid, I'm not sure it is worth it if I can not get imaging to work and going by comments it may not even really give me anything in benefits. Just trying to get to a point whereby imaging can be used for back up, rather than a fresh install each time. -- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke |

1 edit | reply to norwegian Avoid the Silicon Image controller. It has serious issues on pretty much every major operating system out there (Windows, Linux, and FreeBSD). There's been a couple reports on the FreeBSD lists (if I remember right) of people actually experiencing data corruption with those controllers.
Pick yourself up a standard SATA controller (Areca makes a 2-port PCIe model now (fairly expensive), otherwise go with Promise or Highpoint (significantly lower cost); all of them have good support under all major OSes) and use that instead.
You are *absolutely* better off using the native nVidia 590 SLI MCP SATA ports (especially if the chip, BIOS, and driver supports AHCI (pretty sure it does)). Keep the Silicon Image controller disabled at all costs. -- Making life hard for others since 1977. I speak for myself and not my employer/affiliates of my employer. |

Just like to get imaging working without the need for an external case(which ultimately may be the only answer). -- The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing - Edmund Burke |

| reply to norwegian If it means anything, I'm playing with software raid under linux. I have a 4 disk raid5 setup. It seems reliable enough. I've simulated a drive failing, rebuilt the array with a fresh drive, pulled another healthy disk and replaced it with the one that was originally pulled and am rebuilding and using it as I type. My music is streaming off it. |
