Frequently changing IP addresses

Anybody else noticing their ip address changes everyday now?

When I first login to my router, I can only get an IP address lease time for an hour. After it renews itself, I get it for 8 hours.

I can remember having the same IP address for almost a year at a time before. I actually had the same one quite some time ago, for almost 4 years!

Just curious.

This is just a theory.

Perhaps they discovered that certain people have been using a "residential" connection to host servers and such, even if such services might not use a lot of resources?

I once knew a fellow who had an IP address that changed so infrequently, that he could remember it and it would actually be good for months.

DDNS is one way to get around the technical issue.

However, it means violating the T.O.S. If I recall correctly, the prohibition on servers on residential connections is so broadly defined that it includes services such as:

- SSH Server (even single user)
- RDP/VNC (even single user)
- BitTorrent (every user is a client and a server)

Or anything else that provides a service to the outside world.

To avoid this B.S. and to get a static IP, I simply got the Business service. It's more expensive, but at least support seems competent.

I've had the same IP address for over 8 months and I use bittorrent.

I doubt their T.O.S. specifically points out that protocol either...

It doesn't.

It just says no servers on residential accounts. It doesn't specify or elaborate on types of servers, so I'm assuming it can mean anything that performs a server-like function. Even things which in my mind don't quite count.

No servers running here.

Heck,
Noticed just now noticed that I got a different IP address than what I had this morning even. I shut everything down earlier today while a storm was rolling through. Power flashes very frequently here when it gets windy.

None of this has had any effect on my speed or anything, but seems odd when I used to get same IP address for years at a time, or months at a time minimum.

Maybe Charter doesn't like me using Linux mostly and then booting to Windows sometimes.

Or maybe...when Comcast users report short IP address lease times, it is usually related to work Comcast is doing on the plant.

Just another point of information. Because of this thread, I setup an automatic job to track my IP address. I first recorded my IP address on 8/25/08 at about noon and it hasn't changed since then.

According to my router, the lease does expire every eight hours. While that seems a bit short, I assume that's so that Charter can reallocate blocks of IPs as needed between areas without having to wait too long for a block to be completely free.

I don't run a server that's available from the internet, but I do have a home server (behind by router/firewall) that retrieves info from the internet on a regular (several times an hour) basis. This might be what's keeping my IP constant - my connection has regular usage and my address is renewed as soon as it expires.

Yeah,
As long as I stay online, the IP address does not change. The modem needs to be turned off, for it to change.

If Charter works the same way as Comcast, you also need to change the MAC address on the device to the cable modem.

Must not work the same then, because just from the time I replied last time until now (about 7 hours) it has changed again.

This is along another thread I started years ago now, but I am unable to change my MAC address myself. Nothing I have EVER done, will make it change.

Odd. I was just over at a Charter sub's house, today. Put a temporary router on his line. You do know that, by changing the device connected to the modem, you change the MAC address the modem sees? I powered down his computer, powered down his SB-5101, unplugged the CAT 5e patch cord from the modem, plugged it into the router, plugged the router into the modem. Powered up the modem, waited for the lights to settle. Powered up the router, waited for the lights to settle. Powered up the computer, and checked the router status page. Got an IP address in one of Charter's 68.xxx.xxx.xxx ranges, instead of the original Charter 71.xxx.xxx.xxx range IP address he gets on his computer.

When I left, I reset all the hardware, and he was back on the Charter 71.xxx.xxx.xxx IP address. Same exact one he had when I started working on his rig yesterday.

No different from what happens when I play with a friend's Comcast connection.
