How do you remove a snap ring without ...

...snap ring pliers? Any way to do it?

Depending on the size of the snap ring, a pair of Needle-Nose Pliers may work... If you have a pair that you don't mind modifying, you could even grind down the tips to make 'fingers' that will fit into the holes on the snap ring... a bit Harder to work with than true 'snap ring' pliers, but it's do-able...

It's a small ring, about a 1/2" diameter.

Buy a pair of snap ring pliers. They aren't that expensive.

If you plan on re-using the ring, you'll want to have the correct tool anyway. Using the wrong tool can damage/deform the snap ring.

Or worse -- make it fly away in an unknown direction. At work, we don't call them "Jesus! rings" without reason.

That's the best way. Although in the past I've used a pair of awls or needle nose pliers in an emergency.
