Motorola Signal Booster

Okay, well comcast came out and ran a new tap and re-wired everything so I would get primary signal in the house.. which doesn't put me at perfect he said it puts me on the fringes..

I've been testing my cable modems (I have 2) since he came out and I've given the best signal (3.5 and 2 7's from a 3 way splitter) to my best modem and a 7 signal to my don't care so much modem..

I've not seen them go offline much.. but I have seen them go offline occasionally (mainly when I was trying only a 2 way splitter) I saw data loss for about 20-40 seconds the modem didn't have to sync back up though.. (5-10 seconds.. running ping tests I see they lose maybe 1-2 packets out of 10000 to their router’s IP) Thus far there both delivering there bandwidth well and seem generally stable at this point I’d just say it’s not a problem..

The comcast guy said there was nothing I could really do about the length (500 feet he said from pole to house) but he did recommend a amp or amplifier.. the one stated above..

He also said they would come out and set one up for a $25 fee (think that included the amp)
He pretty much suggests that I should run one to fix the power levels.. so here are my figures

Cable Modem 1 (don't care not primary)
Downstream Value
Frequency 609000000 Hz

Signal To Noise Ratio 34.6 dB

Power Level -16.4 dBmV
The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 3
Frequency 33000000 Hz
Power 45.3 dBmV

Cable Modem 2

Frequency 609000000 Hz Locked
Signal to Noise Ratio 37 dB
Power Level -10 dBmV The Downstream Power Level reading is a snapshot taken at the time this page was requested. Please Reload/Refresh this Page for a new reading

Upstream Value
Channel ID 3
Frequency 33000000 Hz Ranged

Power Level 40 dBmV

So the question of course is do I need one.. would you really recommend it?

I've been using one for a few years. I was getting pixilation on the TVs (I have 5 TVs and a cable modem). Works great. I doubt the $25 includes the modem though. Go pick one up yourself and plug it in, nothing to it.

I believe the amp is $70 dollars through Comcast, plus $25 to set it up.

For Cable Modem 2, your -10 dBmv downstream power is within DOCSIS limits, so, as long as it doesn't drift much lower over time, you are OK as is.

Cable Modem 1 has a horrible downstream power level, but you said this modem isn't of concern to you.

Unless you are really strapped for money, my personal recommendation would be to have a tech furnish and install the amp. This way, you will be getting a more professional-grade amplifier, plus the tech will (hopefully) use his test equipment to measure everything and make sure things are optimum. In the case of 2-way communication (cable modems and digital set-top boxes), the amplifier properties are more critical. Worse-case, a poorly-made or improperly-installed amp can send out noise to the system, thus ruining service to your neighbors.

500ft from the road?!!?

im surprised your signal is that good, or that they would install you without building a plant extension back to you...

a 15db gain amp would do fine....an it looks like your upstream is good, so theres no need to have a return amp in it....but be sure it passes 5-42 passively (or as little as possible)...

Why two modems in the first place?

This will vary, around here it $25.00 flat, but ONLY if you have 5 or more outlets. If you have less and you need an amp its considered a design issue and it is free.

In this case I would consider this free.

The tech actually named the "Motorola" too me I'm not sure he said they installed them though for sure..

I'm bound to wait I think (and only act if necessary) this isn't my permanent residence it's just a temporary...

Why 2 modems..? 1 is for vonage and normal stuff the other is for download/upload.. (you do realize that pings spike dramatically when getting max download/upload yes?) I was thinking of getting a 3rd but that's off till I have a house I guess..

You DO realize having two modems for different kinds of use is a bit out of the ordinary yes? Its a perfectly acceptable question.

Im not aware of too many people that download/Upload 24/7 in such a way that they purchase a second account so they can still surf and use other utilities normally.
