[Connectivity] Packet loss and cable modem resets -PA

Hello!

I have recently been experiencing packet loss and random cable modem resets. I have called RCN tech support, but they weren't able to help because at the time of the call the cable modem was connected and showed no problems. After doing some research on these forum to help trouble shoot this problem, i went through and checked to make sure all the cables were connected properly. There is only one RCN installed splitter from the wall to the cable modem. I cycled power on the cable modem and checked the signal page on the cable modem and everything seems to be within acceptable range, but the packet loss and resets persists. The following is from the cable modem config status pages -

Downstream Value
Frequency 735000000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 36.7 dB
Power Level -5.6 dBmV

Upstream Value
Channel ID 4
Frequency 24816000 Hz
Power 36.5 dBmV

HFC MAC Address 00:1a:66:8d:3e:52
CPE USB MAC Address 00:18:c0:95:e8:c1

Here are the log entries during the time when there was packet loss and the cable modem resets -

Re: [Connectivity] Packet loss and cable modem resets

It's possible the cable modem's transciever is dying...how old is the modem? Does it have good airflow (nothing stacked on top of it?)....overheating is an issue sometimes.

What model cable modem?

The cable modem is a Motorola SB5101 purchased almost 1 year ago. It stands alone on my desk and feels slightly warm to the touch, so i don't think overheating is a problem here.

Thanks for the reply.

Still experiencing packet loss and cable modem resets with various frequencies during the past week. Does anyone know if there are diagnostic programs i can run on the Motorola SB5101 to try and trouble shot this problem?

Any help with this annoying problem will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

There's also a free version of PingPlotter you can find by googling around, the rest are trials (with a nag screen)

Have you considered free Line Monitoring here thru BroadbandReports?

Thanks! I'll give DocsDiag and PingPlotter a try.

Thanks for asking lilhurricane. Got DocsDiag and got pretty much the same readings as in my initial post with some variation in the downstream signal to noise ratio and power level -

Signal To Noise Ratio 36.9 dB
Power Level -4.6 dBmV

Packet loss and the cable modem resetting are still happening at randomly, multiple times a day. I might have to take time off work to call tech support during regular business hours since RCN's off hour tech support seems to just go through the motions and says the cable modem is currently connected and there is nothing they can do.

Still hoping one of the RCN reps here will take pity on me and look into this problem.

Re: [Connectivity] Packet loss and cable modem resets -PA

cheungt,

I don't know if this has anything to do with it but when i just looked your modem was cranking away doing 700k upstream for a short period and then it stopped. Your computer was trying to send enough data through the pipe to cause some packetloss...

But, don't get to angry with that response because definitely your modem has been going up and down and up and down I can see it from here the online history of your unit. Is there any chance you can try using the modem from a different cable jack in your home? Can you make sure the fittings are tight otherwise you are definitely going to need a trouble call on this one. I checked the node that you are on and there isn't a bunch of other trouble-calls so your problem is likely localized.

Thanks for checking negativeduck! The 700k upstream you saw was probably my VNC session through an SSH tunnel back to my home PC from work.

As for the packet loss problem, ever since RCN resolved the outage issue in Allentown/Easton last Tuesday, 9/9, the cable modem has been functioning without resets (at least none that i have noticed). When i checked the cable modem log, there hasn't been any

SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing

nor

SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing

entries. The only log entry since 9/9 was

2008-09-13 15:35:54 3-Critical R005.0 Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out

Whatever was done to remedy the outage on 9/9 seem to have corrected my packet loss and cable modem reset problem. I'm hoping things will continue to work properly.

Thanks again for checking this out, i really appreciate your time and effort!

Hmmm, guess i spoke too soon, started getting cable modem resets again today and the log showed

2008-09-17 14:10:12 3-Critical T001.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing
2008-09-17 14:10:08 3-Critical T002.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire FEC framing
