1 edit | Use Integrated Graphics With Monitor? My parents need a new larger monitor for their old Dell computer. Their computer currently has a 17" CRT monitor and 64Mb of Intel integrated graphics with their resolution set at 800x600. I found a nice 22" LCD monitor on sale but the guy at OfficeMax said it would need a new video card in order to run the monitor at a decent resolution. I was hoping to simply hook up the new monitor and run it at 1024x768 so they can at least get a wider view of web pages. Would I be better to get them a 19" monitor maybe? |

kudos:4 | I had video cards with 64Mb and less and ran 1024x768 and even higher without a problem. You should be ok.

The 22" is probably running at 1680 x 1050 native resolution. You won't know until you try it, whether or not the internal video will be sufficient. You should be OK. I have a 20" widescreen at work with only 8MB video memory and it works OK. |

| If the on board video is VGA only then a big screen at that res may look bad. Get a video card with DVI and use DVI to hook up the display. |

The onboard video card will be fine.
For what it's worth, going from 800x600 to 1024x768 won't give them a wider view. You actually need to use a widescreen resolution. Regardless, it should work fine. |

With 64 MB of shared video memory, it should run fine. One trouble I found (sometimes not all the time) is that, the video driver may not let you set the appropriate screen resolution for the wide screen (16X10 instead of 4X3). Usually, a updated driver will fix the problem.
Added: make sure the new LCD has both D-SUB and DVI input.
