Texas!

But...

But Obama is the Messiah. Never in American history have we had a Presidential candidate like him. We should trust in Obama for he is not a typical politician. He will bring hope and change. [/sarcasm]

I just wish people would realize that congress has the power to change things, not the president. When the president says "Lets do this" congress has to decide to do it or not. They can tell the president to forget it and all the president can do is whine about it.

People need to get a clue. The country is screwed up because congress is screwed up. They're responsible for Iraq, they're responsible for the token force in Afganistan, they're responsible for our dependence on foreign oil, they're responsible for our infrastructure falling apart, they're responsible for the national debt.

Get a pattern here folks? There is a man or woman within driving distance of your home that is responsible for all the bullshit we are having to put up with. Quit blaming Bush and Clinton, and go bang on your congressman's door and demand change.

Obama can win a landslide election, and the republicans could end up with a solid majority in congress and the house. Guess who still has the power.

Congress.

Listen a politician is a politician. Both our choices SUCK. McCain is a TERRIBLE CHOICE and Obama is a HORRIBLE choice. Literally, we're stuck voting for the worst of the two evils. McCain supports torture (funny even though he knows what it's like and talks about the horrors he suffered), Fisa, Staying in Iraq, NSA wiretapping, etc etc.

Obama is no different. He voted for Fisa and his VP sucks for technology. The only thing Obama has that McCain doesn't is a No vote on Iraq and Torture. That's seriously it.

That's the ONLY reason he has my vote. I hate the piece of shit otherwise, yet realistic to know that no 3rd party will win things.

Very true. All the attention is paid to the presidential race, but our congressional races are actually the most important because those people represent us directly, and if we don't choose people whose viewpoints align with our own, then we have no one else to blame but ourselves when Congress votes against things we consider important.

Political responsibility doesn't end with the vote. We need to contact our representatives and senators directly to let them know our opinions, 'cause they're probably not reading the forums where we spout our ire.

I agree that there is too much focus on the Executive. And on Telecom issues, it absolutely is the Congress.

I started hoping that McCain would run, perhaps with Rudy as a running mate. Then Ron Paul caught my eyes and ears. Meanwhile, McCain and Rudy both went on the warpath, literally. What I heard from Obama was a consistent message of unity and hope -- more soothing than substantive -- but intangibles that we needed.

Personally, I've have an absolute litmus test over the past several years and that test is torture. It's the main reason I held my nose and voted for the "non-Bush" candidate 4 years ago. When McCain dove for the "middle" on torture back in February by voting against a bill that would ban torture techniques, it told me that I would be voting for the "non-Bush" again. As far as McCain goes, my vote will be one to prevent him from gaining office.

But Congress is a tough one for me. My choice last year was between two non-leaders, the incumbent David Wu who always mirrors the party line in his voting record, and Derrick Kitts, who my partner knew personally as a nice but spineless guy when it came to opposing Republican leadership. Joel Haugen is the GOP -and- Independent opponent this year -- (he supports Obama, environmentalism, and Oregon's Republican Party had taken an official position not to allow him to participate in party events). I'm undecided in this race. On Telecom, David Wu supports Network Neutrality. He also supports maximum limits in media outlet corporate ownership (avoids any one voice from cornering the market by buying out other voices).

The Senate for me is Gordon Smith (R), who I personally like and appreciate and who seems willing to do what he thinks is right despite his leadership's position. Jeff Merkley is the Democrat opponent and so far has only showed me that he can sling mud and now both campaigns are spending too much time attacking one another. Gordon is the real deal -- bipartisan, thoughtful, and etc., he's proven that. On Telecom, Smith volunteered to sponsor a bill to make the FCC's Network Neutrality policy principles a law (Chairman Martin turned him down).

That's why the Obama-rama show is back-peddling and position changing on every issue. The Obama running for President is NOT Obama the JUNIOR Senator from Illinois (all 143 days of it). Look at his voting record re his positions as presidential candidate ! He's not even in the neighborhood !

He'll promise whatever s**t gets him elected, immediately switch back to Obama the JUNIOR Senator and tell everyone it's that mean 'ol Nancy Pelosi & Harry Reed show pushing all this stuff through. Not HIM !

yuck

I don't know if they're the most important, but they're at least equally as important as the presidential race.
