[Vista] Vista Home Premium - Unable to Uninstall or Install Driv

This was originally posted in the Networking forum, but it may be more appropriate here since I think the problem is related to my Vista OS install (besides, I received no replies there).

I'm unable to update, or uninstall, the drivers for an Intel PRO/1000 PT Desktop Adapter.

Configuration:

Dell Inspiron530 Desktop
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel PRO/1000 PT Desktop Adapter

The drivers installed fine when I first added the Intel gigabit NIC. Now, however, I cannot uninstall or update the drivers.

I get the following error dialog, no matter if I try to uninstall the drivers from Add/Remove in the Control Panel, OR running the latest driver Installer:

"Error 1713. Intel Network Connections cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical support group."

Just to reiterate, this error pops up when I:

1. Try to remove the existing Intel drivers through Control Panel.

2. Try to install new drivers from the latest installer package.

3. Unzipping the Installer and going into the directory to launch the installer.

Oh, and trying to update through the Device Manager didn't work (but it didn't give me that error either).

Intel Tech Support tells me they double checked, and there is no problems installing the drivers on their Vista machine; therefore, there must be something wrong with my OS installation.

Any ideas please? ... short of reinstalling Vista, which I'm very reluctant to do.

Thanks!

Re: [Vista] Vista Home Premium - Unable to Uninstall or Install

Error 1713 appears to be a Windows Installer error.

Is there any more information on the error logged in the Event Viewer?

Also, when did you first install the drivers?

Copy the files you don’t want to lose onto an external hard drive or jump drive and simply put the Vista DVD disc in the drive and reinstall Vista…

You will than have it corrected in less than 20 minutes.

Copy your saved files back on the new operating system.

In America we say "I forgot more than you know". We never say "I forget more than you know" because that infers a low IQ since you can't remember things.

I guess you didn't get a response last time and you have to bring it up again. OK, thanks for the correction, I'll say it one more time.

I FORGOT MORE THAN YOU KNOW.

Is it correct?

Your last post, save data, reinstall OS, restore data. Sounds helpful, let me tell you, in chinese, there is a saying "who doesn't know a mother is a woman".

He will fix it fast my way..

Let me tell you something sonny...General Anthony C. McAuliffe said it best to you when he answered the German's at Bastogne; It, my friend, is an old "American saying".

Having been in 18th Airborne myself I see you are a really tough internet bulletin board bully. We have another old American saying that goes like this: "get lost".

How do you know?
How do you conclude a repair/clean install is in order?

Of cource, backup, reinstall, restore is the ultimate trump card. Like I said, you said nothing new.

OT:
General McAuliffe didn't tell you that he wished you wre on the other side.

I looked in the Event Viewer just now after trying another unsuccessful install.

Log Name: Application
Source: MsiInstaller
EventID: 11713
Level: Error

Product: Intel(R) Network Connections -- Error 1713.Intel(R) Network Connections cannot install one of its required products. Contact your technical support group. System Error: 1605."

The original drivers were installed about 6 months ago, when I purchased the NIC. BTW, I downloaded the older drivers and, out of curiosity, tried an installation ... identical error.

Can you install any other apps?

May try this: »www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta···yLang=en

Hope it helps.

Also, the System Error: 1605 (from the Event Log error) appears to mean "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed."

That may give an indication that there is a problem with the Windows Installer configuration information for the Intel pro driver installation.

To try to fix that, consider downloading and running the Windows Installer Cleanup utility and remove the Windows Installer configuration information for the Intel driver installation:

»support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Then reinstall the original drivers and then try to uninstall them.

Create a System Restore Point beforehand.

Another possibility, and you may want to try this first, is to try to uninstall or update the drivers from another user account with administrator privileges (create one if necessary),

Yes, I can install / uninstall all other programs without a problem.

I tried the Windows Installer 4.5 and I'm still getting the same error.

Thanks for the tips.

I managed to get a detailed log of the aborted installation... it's too large to post here, but near the bottom is this:

"Property(C): ISSCRIPT_VERSION_MISSING = The InstallScript engine is missing from this machine. If available, please run ISScript.msi, or contact your support personnel for further assistance."

Edit: After following your procedure below, it's fixed! Thanks a lot.
