Earth to Corona, is anyone home inside? Obviously not. The fact that the DTV website is in many languages is not the point. The point here is ELDERLY PEOPLE, ARE NOT INFORMED. Why, well older people tend not to understand the changes that take place. Sure, the website is in various languages. PEOPLE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND HOW TO GET THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE. Does that not click? I highly doubt 70 and 80 year old senior citizens are tech savvy enough, when people 50+ aren't. That is all fine and wonderful to reach younger people, but you still run into the problem of elderly people of ALL BACKGROUNDS and NATIONALITIES getting there to read it. I only see TV ads in English, too. Hence, if Asian Grandma who doesn't speak English doesn't understand what's going on she's out of luck. The same literally for all seniors who might not understand the change. Does that hit home, or no? I'm guessing no.
As per the government getting faster internet, I am for increased broadband penetration. HOWEVER, that is optional. Read this word slowly. O-P-T-I-O-N--A-L. With a national broadband policy, PEOPLE ARE NOT FORCED to have broadband. Any improvements made to the system are not ones that require much change, anyway. All changes are on the isp side. If you get fiber, the most that might need done is an upgrade in your modem. Quite simple. Hell, the ISP will come in and do that for you. When it comes to DTV, this is NOT OPTIONAL. Hence, those who don't understand what is going on will be out of luck. There's no TV guy visiting everyone's house to say here's why your signal doesn't work, like an ISP would do with broadband. Not to mention those living in retirement communities that aren't labeled as single dwellings will be forced to buy the equipment on their retirement checks.

And, speaking of "optional" and what the government should and shouldn't be doing, aren't you one of those people that bitch and whine and complain about how the US is ranked 13th in some study about broadband penetration and should "do something" about it? -- "To be sincere, you don't have to know anything, you just say whatever makes you feel good and spin and smug circles in your tiny fucked up little head, happy as long as you're true to yourself. In other words, Sincerity is bullshit!" -Penn Jillette | |
