"linguistically isolated households"

If you want to immigrate to a country, LEARN THE DAMN LANGUAGE!! This is why I'm thankful that Canada has legally recognized official languages, good luck getting a job and thus surviving here unless you speak either English of French.

Unless it's LA or San Francisco, the population the OP is mentioning about (especially the elderly), do know English and can read and speak it even -- as it was required for so many years to learn. No naturalized Japanese-American that I know can't.

My mom may not be able to read "War and Peace", but she reads the newspaper and can watch regular TV, fine. This issue wouldn't even be a problem, as she has cable and her videos (same can be said of any Asian who wants to watch more native programming -- need a dish or cable outside NYC, LA or San Francisco anyway).

This article is a prime example of how one region is so out of touch with the rest of the country. If you harbor immigrants and don't make them learn the native language, you do them a disservice. They aren't children, and it's disgusting to see any interest group wanting them to remain their political pawns by keeping them deaf, dumb and blind. It reminds me of the old plantation way of keeping Blacks behind.
