Carleton Place, ON | Modem Removed - Unavailable device (COM1) Hello,
I have been working on a friends laptop for the last few days and have come to a dead end. Her dial-up connection on her laptop decided to stop working the other day. When I got it home, I noticed it was full, FULL of viruses and other spyware junk. I think I managed to remove it all but I am still not able to dial out. It has a built in wireless connection so I can get online and connect that way, but I cant create a dial-up connection. It looks like Windows wont recognize the embedded modem. I have tried to reinstall the drivers, but Windows wont even find the drivers, I have to install them manually. I checked around online and saw that some people ended up solving this problem by purchasing a USB dial-up modem. So I bought one today and install the software and drivers no problem. When I create a new dial-up connection, in the General Tab, under the "Connect using" field I have a red X and "Modem Removed - Unavailable device (COM1) In the device manager it shows my USB modem installed and when I query the modem, I don't get any errors. Besides reinstall Windows XP, does any one have any suggestions?

1 edit | Well, go figure. I just figured it out. After reading many forums for the last week I finally found a solution. I was reading this thread... »forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-20···dem.html and decided to check my registry files. I was missing "ProviderFileName0"="unimdm.tsp" (Unimodem 5 Service Provider) After I created that registry file and rebooted the PC, I was able to create my dial up connection using the USB modem. Well, maybe this will help someone else down the road.
