Lure? Looks like some kind of metal art to me.

It's really quite beautiful. You'd have to get a real answer from a true fisherman, but it looks like some kind of spinner to me if for fishing. However, the more I look at it, the more it looks like a piece of jewelry. It looks as if it's sterling silver, some of which is really tarnished but most of it not. Do you know that it was used for fishing?

Looks to me like it's made of brass with mother of pearl glued to the brass. I don't see any place where the hooks or line would be tied on.

Re: [ID?] can anyone id this lure?

You're right. What I saw as tarnish was possibly really brass. But I do think that the mouth and is still sterling or some other kind of metal. Either way, it sure doesn't look like any lure I've ever seen. I sure wouldn't fish with it. I wouldn't want to lose it. It does look as if it once had a plasce for a chain on the top of it, There looks like a spot where it was broken off on the head.

How big is it? There's nothing in the photo to show the scale of it.

That is literally, OFF THE HOOK!

Never seen it, very strange. Is it really intended to be a lure? Why not? I bet it would catch fish but, that sucker belongs in a museum!

I have something that looks identical to that, but at least the one I have is way too big to be a lure, and can stand by itself on a shelf if you bend it right. If yours can do the same, I would just assume it is a piece of shelf art like mine.

its about 3.5 to 4 inches long, it also bends kinda like it would be a fish swimming in the water

I don't know that it's a lure- I'd sooner say collectable or jewelry.

Back in the 60's I had a tie belt with 2 fish dangling off the ends. They looked almost identical to yours, except the mouth wasn't open as far. I'm inclined to think it's jewellery or some sort of bangle. There are some kids living down the street who'd probably love to attach one like it to their body jewellery.

My mother has a fish similar to that ...same construction.. only a gold material. It's on a cord, meant to be worn as a necklace.

It could be a bottle opener or an articulated piece of jewelry.

You'd have to reel REALLY REALLY fast to keep if off the bottom....
Also, no hooks visible.....so....art, jewelry....something besides what a fish would go after....

Re: [ID?] can anyone id this lure?

Actually I think it is a lure. It would have been used as trolling lure. It would have been rigged with a Y leader and perhaps a weight on the bottom of the Y. The bottom part of the leader would be longer than the fish and have multiple hooks attached. When trolling rather fast the fish have a tendency to miss the lure, hence the hooks trailing past it. To the OP -- I notice you are in Michigan. I would try to talk to some folks who would have knowledge about fishing in the Great Lakes in the 40's and 50's. My guess is this is an antique lure which has obviously been used. There were a lot of large fish back then in the Great Lakes. I am going to guess this is a lure that was used for sport fishing sometime in the heyday of the sport.

Here's another possibility.

From the site: "This is an example of an articulated fish cast in silver. These items are used in ritual activities particularly fertility festivals."
