The way I understand it, dish wants to be sure you are the one using the receiver. With the phone line connected they can verify that. Not sure about own or lease. |

| Mine works the way joako describes. You can't do anything that requires the box to call in, order movies, check billing on screen, etc. I've seen nag screens years ago about no phone line, but no extra charge. Haven't had a phone on mine for a couple years. To tell you the truth, Dish couldn't care less where the box is at. Your smart card only works 1 box. You are paying a per box fee to keep it active.
For clarity, I own all my boxes. If they rent any, they may put different conditions on them. |

  Smith6612 Premium join:2008-02-01 united state | DISH's new boxes don't use smart cards anymore. It's all software based. I have one of their newest Standard Definition Dual TV DVR units and it has no card in it's smartcard slot. |

| We just have 3 regular newer boxes. Not sure what the difference is with the newer ones. Do they need an active phone line or just a phone line to transmit/send the signals/data whatever its called that gets the shows/programs to the TVs?
