Having a router is more secure, primarily because of the built-in firewall that come on most routers. Now, some people prefer to have a choice in routers, often because they want features not provided on the AT&T offering or they just prefer a different brand, so they get the standard modem and buy a third party router.

  To anyone who can help: AT&T is offering to pay for my dsl modem or dsl router. Is one or the other more secure? Any other advantages either way? Thank you in advance for your help.
