The attenuation could be good.

What I'm getting at is that given your speed, path and the great values on upstream (all upstream values are nice), your occupancy on the downstream is out of whack, which is indicative of a short or voltage cross.

If it was a short some place I would expect your attenuation to be higher and your SNR jumping more, so I won't say its a short, but rather a voltage cross (This is how a couple of techs explained it to me) on the outside line.

If it was anything major, during the spring or fall (or early winter) it would likely have shown more, but it didn't.

From what I make out your SNR is jump (High and low) from around 11.5 to 7.5, or about 4 points.

If it jumps 2 points at most I would say that's stable for DSL. At 4 its problems, especially since you are 1.5 points away from disconnects and other issues. Toss in that 95% occupancy and it adds up to a voltage cross.

I couldn't begin to tell you how to get someone out to fix it, unless you purposely cause a short on your line (if you have land line try and fix it so you have static when you call).

Get a ticket open and get a date.

Bell will monitor the line from the test center, so every hour or so cause a short to make everything stop working (make a load).

When the tech is there make sure the short you made is gone, show him your stats and graphs (if you get a beginner your shit out of luck) and tell him its the line pair.

A half decent tech will test the available pairs and give you the best ones. Get the stats before he leaves and tell him if its better or not and to keep changing pairs till it's better, or if it's worse have him put the old pair back.

This is the only monkey business I can think of to get a tech out to you. Otherwise both the ISP and Bell will ignore you.

If the ISP is decent they will play along with you and record Loss of sync to submit to Bell etc.

Chances are Bell will just drop your profile and you will have to argue with your ISP to bump it up again because Bell likes their short-cut band-aids to fix things.

Or offer a case of 24 to a local tech you find or a tech from the forum if you know of one near you.

This is how it appears to me, and this is how I think you will get any response at all (and it all depends of the quality of the tech you get).

Once they sent me a phone tech who didn't do DSL and he dropped my 3-meg connection to 512 and told me my phone static was fixed and he left me like that when I said no way. heh.

So make sure you get a high-speed tech and not a phone tech.

I see nothing else. We both know the ISP won't do nothing for an SNR jumping 4 points and Bell will do everything possible to ignore you if you are not their customer since you have no one to complain to like Kevin Crull.

It's market forces.

Also, it may not be the drop line itself, but rather a bad pair from where-ever the cable comes from that feeds you to the drop line.

The guy who came here to finally fix the issue had to drive like 4 blocks away to change pairs, then he would come and hook it up in the box up on the pole that my drop was connected to.

He also shortened my loop by removing me from the loop, I think they call it drop cutting maybe?
Bicephale : Hi statistic lovers,

I had one large capture gathered this winter which
remained to be parsed... It's an interesting sample
for me because i've noticed a "bias" effect after my
record was separated into two sets: one which has
nicely aligned time-stamps and another where those
hour marks reveal some "jitter". See what happened
when i decided to superpose the curves instead of
averaging them as usual!... In my opinion, it's partly
due to the rejection of marginal "sparkle" events: it
defines/flattens a curve when those aren't allowed
to contaminate it.
Bicephale : Hi TerTech,

Oh... I didn't think of the MidNight MadNess Syndrome
but most people would use batteries for that, after all!

:o

Well, i do remember that your error rate was significant
(if not severe) so maybe when you observe instabilities
it just might be the case, actually. I wouldn't pretend i
follow laboratory-grade methodology here but i feel that
averaging fifty-thousand-six-hundred samples (one per
fifteen seconds for ten days) as i've done lately should
help to reject marginal events... The most potent ones
can still be equivalent to millions of CRC errors per day
so a few of these will contaminate a curve all right but
they tend to be quite brief and they're easy enough to
recognize anyway. The animated .GIF shown above was
made after marginal events were removed as 'GNUmeric'
won't display the curve's most significant part otherwise:
large numbers completely upset its auto-scale feature as
i explained in a previous post. The rest was done using a
graphic editor (no fancy trick)... The 'DMT' capture was suggesting
an error rate of about 1978 CRC Errors per Day, which is
37 % higher than my estimated 1238 CRC Errors per day,
possibly because of contamination. Noise tends to be random for me. Sure, there's the predictable 'cooking hour' noise surge; but I've also seen the 'morning shower hour' noise surge and even the 'midnight madness' noise surge. Some weeks the stats are worse than average, some weeks they are better. I believe that even the weather plays a part in the performance of the modem. Unless there were a way to hook up two modems to the same line at the same time - how can we be sure that the statistics we collect for each unit under test were taken under the exact same conditions?

Bicephale : What else to do on a rainy week-end?...

Well, here are three easy to compare blocs
of concatenated statistics, the tests were
conducted on September 16 during one of
many crisis periods where noise was severe
enough to totally disrupt my DSL connection
unless i used some tweak trick. This noise
issue was finally solved when i understood
the true nature of the noise source, after
two months of trouble-shooting: i live on
the 2nd floor and i had installed the MoDem
on the kitchen countertop, most likely just
a few feet right above a dimmer-controlled
lamp in my neighbour's kitchen, downstairs.

I figure this light bulb was turned on when
dawn arrived (apparently once a TV program
started) and it usually went off before 0 h
but not always. With this in mind, i moved
my DSL unit to a higher location which is a
few feet away from the previous point and
this reduced noise to a manageable level...

:D

In any case, my three samples are far from
sufficient to draw definitive conclusions
but they point at some interesting problem:
what influence does noise have over final
"browser" speed? Hummm... My middle tweak
was the worst in terms of CRC Errors and it
only displayed a marginal advantage over my
lowest JAVA speed test so i'd say this must
confirm there are two elements to trade-off
(read optimize). A higher connection rate
may compensate for noise up to a point, it
must be a bell-shaped relation and i wonder
which tweak corresponds to the sweet-spot.

Lets not forget that noise may vary through
time. Perhaps dimmed-lamp originated noise
is roughly constant but not necessarily the
other sources... The dimmer noise probably
raised the noise floor every single evening
and yet this middle sample may have simply
happened to record a noise burst of different
origin. In short, multiple samples should be
used to null-out marginal events, ideally...

Plenty of fun to have on rainy evenings!

:p
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

VelCom - Hybrid Stats (FW v6.1.0.5-AA, #D8h)

VelCom - Hybrid Stats (FW v6.1.0.5-AA, #C8h)

VelCom - Hybrid Stats (FW v6.1.0.5-AA, #B8h)

Bicephale : About the SNR Margin...

This set of curves demonstrates how misleading it
might be to trust the SNRM curve alone - imagine if
using "static" numbers only!... I don't recall what's
the exact timing but i sure remember that i turned
on the 3 fans (Intec's XBox 360 'Air Cooler', item#
G8648C) late after midnight. That's a "green" device
(environmentally friendly) using a small switching-
mode power supply and it was found at Zellers, it's
installed right below my MoDem (or in front of it for
the old GNet) since i arrived here in Quebec city. I
suspect there's noise comming from the fans, their
PSU or both so it's something i must investigate!...

:o

But right now, my point is this: the SNR Margin data
which was captured at 20 h simply didn't allow me to
foresee what would happen in the next few minutes:
SNRM was 5 dB for the most part of the day and it
was even lower during the period between midnight
and 5h30, actually. Yet, a major disruption occured
after 20 h which even twenty hours worth of curves
couldn't help to predict, nonetheless! Put shortly, a
24 h set of curves is nice to have but it's even nicer
to collect many of those so that a pattern emerges.

;)

Back to the SNR Margins, we'd find it most impractical
to watch the numbers every fifteen minutes so that's
why i prefer 'STMT' over 'DMT' if using a SpeedTouch:
the curves are much more informative than a pair of
numbers which may be great for a SpeedStream 4200
while the very same figures appear to be dangerously
marginal (at best!) for a typical SpeedTouch 5x6v6...

:p

By the way, looking at SNR Margins one can't tell when
i turned off my fans but it seems the CRC curve helps.

So, i invite the readers to draw their own conclusions!

:D
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

VelCom - Siemens SS4200 (2008-Aug-20 20h)

From the ground up!

Bicephale : Hi everyone,

I'll cease updating my "Tweaks" thread next week
after moving to Quebec city (Limoilou), the phone
line conditions will change and this means that
future MoDem comparisons will need to be based on
new grounds as a consequence. Further confusion
can be avoided, hopefully, by launching a separate
thread where my future findings can be posted so
here it is: those are my very 1st static numbers
and they're so fresh i can't actually join speed/
latency tests because PPoE authentification works
but there's no real connectivity yet... Perhaps
i must explain... Well, VelCom was very kind to
me as they agreed to activate the DSLAM a few days
before i'm finished moving to my new appartment!

In other words, the DSLAM card is ready and VelCom
is able to access Bell's Line-Test portal for that
phone line but my DSL access still isn't providing
browsing capability - and that's totally normal or
i'd have to pay for two DSL accounts, obviously...

;)

Honestly, i value this level of cooperation shown
by the VelCom guys as their solution garantees my
access is ready (and maybe even optimized) by the
time i'm done moving (e.g. no delays whatsoever)!

:D

Warm salutations to Matthew and his co-workers!!!

:)
<TABLE WIDTH=95% align=center border=0 CELLPADDING=4">

VelCom - Thomson ST546v6, FW v7.4.3.2 (Limoilou, 2008-Jul-8)

VelCom - GNet GBB2060-Xi (Limoilou, 2008-Jul-8)
