| DSL Loses Connection When Clsoet Door Opens?
I have just notice this. For the past few weeks; sometime when I open my closet door, the DSL light on my Westell 6100 modem blinks and it loses conenction. It comes back several seconds later, but I'm wondering how can opening a closet door affect my modem?! Very strange! And also, my closet door is located in the other corner of my room.
Can anyone describe what's happening? |

Just a guess. |

Well, I had the DSL modem for a year and months. I don't think I notice this problem before. |

| Sorry, what can I say?
The usual expectation around here is that we are supposed to solve problems with zero information, as if we can read minds.
You however, at least provided something. But it's still well beyond the reach of my magic wand.
Something tells me arm waving isn't going to get it either.
Maybe it isn't ghosts or the twilight zone. Voodoo perhaps? |

| reply to LastXdeth said by LastXdeth :You guys are not very helpful Well you haven't given us much to go on yet. Did you see the questions about how is the wire run? In this case it matters not if it didn't happen before, as long as it's repeatable now, the now is what needs to be fixed.
Try picking up your phone and listen to it when you go to the closet, do you hear any clicks pops or static? |

2 edits | reply to LastXdeth I have been around the forums for several years now and I have to say this is a first....
When you say the DSL light blinks I am going assume for a sec you are just talking about it is losing sync and not losing power for a split second to the modem. If you can rule out the power problem and your telephone wire from the jack to the modem is in good shape...keep reading.
I think you are going to need to figure out where your phone line comes in to that jack. If it is in the wall or under carpet as some suggested it is most likely FUBAR. It may be easier to just drop another line under the house and to the nid. It is easy and doesnt cost very much. Heck while you are doing it you may as well do a homerun.
Dont get me wrong, it could always be something else crazy like the nid being on that wall and the door if shut hard enough moves some lose wire...I doubt it but heck you never know... Until you post more info I think the safe bet is to trace that line back to the nid or drop the new line.
Here is info on how to do a homerun. »AT&T Southeast Forum FAQ |

If so are you using compact flouresent bulbs in the closets?? If so try taking the bulb out and see if it continues. |

@bellsouth.net | reply to LastXdeth Does the power socket that the modem uses have a switch near the closet? You could be interrupting the power to the modem via a loose power connection in the wall switch . The door opening vibrates the loose connection |

| My house is a new house (3 years old), so I think the wires are somewhere located in the walls.
My closet door does not have any added fuctionality. It's just a normal closest door. My modem is also connected directly to the wall power outlet and the DSL cable is, too, connected directly to its phone jacket.
The modem doesn't loose connection contiously when I leave my closet door open. It only loses conenction when I'm in the process of opening it. It will lose connection and regain it.
I'm not sure what's going on. I can say that when I open the closet door, it takes more pressure to open it because there's a hanger on the door. So, when open, it makes a loud thud and vibrations. |

WAG though. |

| reply to LastXdeth Although having a PhD in electrical engineering, it took me months to realize that my home office lamp dimmer was the culprit in "randomly" jamming my home high-speed ADSL line. Any dimmer setting other than full on or full off creates a lot of electrical noise (hearable on an AM radio) which jams the phone line frequencies just above audio which is where the ADSL signal lives. So, check to see if you your closet has dimmed or electronic light associated with the door. Or, the door could be a reflector of some other radio frequency noise source. Of course, the problem could be caused by many other effects, also. Hope this helps. |
