| Mexico DSL I was just reading that: Mexican cell phone operator america movil said on Friday it has bought 100 percent of Telecomunicaciones de Puerto Rico, a leading telecommunications services provider on the island.
Last year, america movil said it was buying Verizon Communications' 52 percent stake in the firm.
The deal gives america movil, with $21.2 billion in sales last year, entry into a new market as the operator ratchets up pressure on regional competitor Telefonica.
America Movil has grown rapidly across Latin america since it was set up in 2000, snapping up smaller rivals in a multibillion dollar spending spree.
America Movil is owned by Carlos Slim Helu(the worlds 3rd richest man) along with Telmex and Telcel. And I wanted to reply the poster, getting a message that the post is to old to reply it. Hopefully re posting will help. Somebody has to hear this: how can it not be that Mr Slim is the third richest man in the world?
In Mexico, Half the population lives under poverty levels, and Telcel charges an average of $25 a month for DSL cx, where the average yearly income goes somewhere about $6.500. Meaning that to have Internet access, in general will take about $300 a year meaning 5% of total income. Not to mention there is basically no competition and, of course Telmex offers no other kinds of packages.
In comparison, AT&T charges from $12.50 to $50.00 on its various packages, where income goes from $25.000 to $150.000. Let us just put it this way: say your income was $25.000 and you had the average BASIC DSL of $17.50. That will mean that you will be spending an average of $210.00 a year just for you internet services, in turn it will only mean about 2% of your income. Take that and you will have the third richest man of the world.
Of course, it all is at the expense rightsless consumers, and a lack of competition. I think it is called a monopoly. |
