DeathK : Apparently my dad just bought a D90, even though he really doesn't have any lenses to speak of to use with it (he just has an old Nikkor macro lens with auto-nothing). Not to mention he's not really what I would consider an avid photographer, at least not anywhere like he used to be when he was younger. I'm pretty sure he's been in his mid-life crisis for a while now as he's really into Ebay and buying stuff he doesn't need.

Anyway, maybe I'll get to try it out. Who knows, maybe he might let me take it off his hands for a couple hundred and he can have my D80.

Interesting. I didn't think of buying used. I'm seeing the D80 with one lens in the $849-$899 range. I was ready to pull the trigger yesterday. The Ritz price was $899, but after hearing the price will drop significantly I decided to wait.

Mellow : You don't HAVE to flip the dial to V mode, you can leave it on M or A or S and still have a CAMERA. I just like to know that I CAN take video if I so choose, I really digg Nikon giving us this option.

You speak as if trade offs are somehow being made or that the D90 isn't a great camera. Nikon doesn't have any problems whatsoever in making superb DSLR's. Adding in video capabilities is just icing on the cake.

Things go stagnant if there aren't people/entities/companies that push the envelope. The DSLR market needs a shakeup like this to keep everyone on their toes.

Worse case scenario you swap cards and use one for Video the other for Pictures. Or buy a real big one.

I agree 100%. Also for non-professionals the abilty to do both well with the same equipment is a huge plus. I will not carry a Camera and Video Camera. I chose to carry a Camera only when I'm out. But a DSLR that can also do good video, I'm sure I could put to good use.

ccallana : Once you have live view, its pretty much a no-brainer add-on - all you need is to record what you are already putting on the LCD. Resolution is a lot smaller than the sensor is capable of, so you aren't recording massive images.

HD video is not small though - big memory cards are going to be needed unless they compress it quite a bit.

Well, I can say with absolute cetainty that I'm not and I agree with Tom's statement 100%. So I guess you really don't know as much as you think you do.

As to the 300 f/2.8, well my 8 year old Sony camcorder pulls an equivilent of about 550mm f/1.4. I'm sure the glass isn't up to the same standards, but that's something that could certainly be corrected.

You're right on the money there, Kewl. Forget video, give me a 20 stop SR, ISO that starts at 1 and goes to 5 million with zero noise, a 1/512,000 shutter speed, a built in flash that works better than any current hot shoe model, etc.

This is the first High Quality DIGITAL IMAGE CAPTURING DEVICE. It is the logical progression of the digital technology used today. There were lots of people (old folks who considered themselves Professionals but were actually just dinosaurs) who made similar statements about Digital cameras when they first came out.

Times change and technology evolves. Learn, adapt, or be left behind.

Hmmmm....an insulting tone to your response. I wonder why.

I think the best course of action is to use specific tools that were designed for the job. Phones are for talking, cameras are for taking photos, video cameras are for taking video, shovels are for digging. Sure, convergence may allow cross functionality, but at a loss in quality to all the elements that are converged. Why water down the critical elements of what makes a camera great by adding video to the mix? Let's look to increase dynamic range, improve auto focusing, ISO capabilities.....and on and on. Make what's great about a dslr that much greater. Going in another direction will sap away attention from the still camera to the video portion of the device.

gugarci : I think it's very handy to have both. I rarely take video anymore. And I hate people that take video tape countless minutes of a scene, and make everyone else wait, like the scene it's going to change all of the sudden. :mad:

But for quick videos that you could keep with your pictures it could be of great value.

overhill : It's an interesting development for sure. I have been in many circumstances recently where having the ability to record 720p video, 24 fps, up to 5 minutes could have been very handy indeed. I know it isn't the same as a dedicated video system, but it would do in a pinch to document something that is difficult with still images. I for one hope that this is pushed farther and is soon available with other brands...it's just a matter of time.

I have to hand it to Nikon for their skill in creating buzz and excitement around their latest cameras.

Frankly, I would want to use a body suited for videography for video for obvious reasons. Canon already has marketshare for its camcorder products. Now, a potential line of nikon camcorders could be on the horizon.

Rubicon : DX Lenses will sticking around for a looong time. I like the fact that you can still use them on the FF bodies in crop mode (AKA movie mode?) ;)

Jodokast96 : They're still here, but given the recent thread discussing just this, that was enough for me anyway. But here's one more reason. Even with all of the new hard drive and flash video camera models out there, I still prefer tape. We criticisize camera makers that don't include RAW, yet will let them compress the hell out of our video? No thanks give me the (as uncompressed as possible) tape and let me worry about that.

Nezmo : So, and please do not take this as a negative comment on Nikon because I have no opinion there, where did all the criticism go of DSLRs having video capability? A while back it was the devil incarnate. Now it's the latest must have... or so it seems.

This is an interesting development I think. I just bought a 1080 video camera (it's very cool, about the size of a coke can) and it has a 3.something MP still camera in it with all your favorite manual overrides possible. Having a still camera in a camcorder is not new of course, nor is it something I care one way or the other about, but the convergence seems to be approaching a decent level.

Mellow : The only "downside" I can see with doing videos on the D90 is the lack of autofocus, you will have to go manual focus if you wish to track objects. I will have to wait and demo one of these before buying to see if the video capability is something worth while. The body alone at $999 is a good deal, the video is just a bonus.

Exit : Canon has officially lost this market. 50D will be sales will be destroyed by the D90...... :D

Hopefully this will teach those guys/gals at Canon to add new features to cameras and not just release another 10D MK5
