| It's The Same For Most Telcos Once I learned that Embarq was offering dry loop DSL as a "retention offer," I was stoked. I called in and inquired about the service, only to be told that "wasn't available in my area." What a load of crap. It wasn't until I threatened to swap to cable did they change their tune.
The land line is dying...there is little the telcos can do to stop it. |

| a good part on why their dying is their "other taxes and fees" that are a load of crap. Why not change to something that doesnt have that line attached especially with the ATT/VZ/Embaq will tell you that those are just taxes and fees that they're allowed to charge but are not required or they have no clue what the money actually goes to. |

| I must mention that now that I have dry loop DSL...the only fee they charge besides the basic monthly fee is a 1 dollar E911 charge. First time I've ever gotten a monthly bill and it's been right around what I thought it should be. |

Hingham, MA | I think there's some sort of legal requirement that all active phone lines, even if only for dry loop DSL, must be able to respond to someone dialing 911 on them. |

| I'm going to have to get a dry line DSL setup at my old office, I'm wondering what kind of insane things AT&T going to put me through to get it and what kinda of extra fees they'll tack on to it like E911 to a DSL only line to a broom closet. |

| also you will be paying full price for that DSL line. They combine what you would pay for Landline plus DSL together to get that DSL only price. You don't save anything so i don't see what the big deal is with a dry line with ATT |

I've had naked DSL from AT&T since late last year and I haven't been charged a penny more or a penny less than the monthly price I was quoted over the phone (no contract either). No taxes, fees or government charges at all. Just $28.99/mo for AT&T DSL Direct HSI Pro. (personal information redacted)

How is this fee any different than the other BS fees on your bill. Some fees are simply pure profit for the Teleco. |

Good luck,...youre gonna need it.
Be prepared to dispute a lot of extra charges that you will have NO idea where they came from,.. OR from "services" that you didnt want or ask for.
Get your state Public Service Commission on speed dial.

I now have AT&T dry loop and still have a dial tone. I believe it is required by law that you can still access 911. I have old AT&T cell phones with no SIM cards that still allow access to 911. I keep one in my car for emergencies.

| that depends on what state you live in. In Ohio VZ will provide you a dial tone for 911 on all lines regardless if their active or not. If they're not they actually have them set up to call their offices and sign up for phone service.
But Ohio does not require this as ATT does not do it. |

Good luck if you were/are in Ohio with the PUC against ATT. They are in their pockets. You're better off here with the Consumers Council. |

yah but that was pricing last year. It's changed since then and in this area its the same price as it would be with dial-tone. Actually more than what you would pay with cable HSI for the same speed. |

Nope, I'm in California where we get charged like mad on POTS lines with things like the 'pay-for-your-neighbors-phone-service' tax and 'keep-your-phone-number-the-same-each-month-or-we-will-change-it-randomly' fee.
I think I'll just get the POTS line and stick a modem on it so I can dial in if the DSL line goes down. :S |
