Re: Hmm....

We only have At&T or crappy cable internet available here. We have the elite 6meg dsl and I have yet to get above 5000 and they say that that is fast enough and don't worry about it, it's within their range of speed that they have to offer me. If you switch, I hope that you get faster speeds than me.

You maximum speed is only going to be about 5220kbps
What speeds are you getting?

With overhead on at&t, the best speed you could hope for on a 6M down connection would be 5100.

Real providers don't use the awful hack known as PPPoE.

I don't understand why at&t doesn't compensate for overhead in it's stated speeds... just advertise it as 5.2Mbps.

As crummy as PPPoE is, ATM overhead is the biggest culprit preventing him from getting his advertised speeds. At least Verizon over-caps to compensate for it.

The area I was in while in school was ex-gte verizon. They gave you the sync rate that compensated for overhead, but in that area they used dhcp instead of pppoe. Speeds were actually higher than the advertised rate because of that.

Back when I had AT&T DSL, I also had elite, I was about 300 ft. from my RT and had perfect line stats, new drop, new jack, and only received 5200 at most on the download. That's just how it is with them.
