Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Your downstream portion of the line isn't synced properly. Right now I'd try to fix your sync by trying to clean up your line a little bit, and then if the sync is 3360/864 and the margins are better, you can get it. But if you want it for now, your upstream sync will take a little more of a hit but visit the Verizon Direct forum. I'd try to clean it up first though, but it's your line.

How do I "clean up", my line? with soup?

Hi all,
I am a newbie, as I just discovered this page today. Here are my stats. First I am supposed to have 3mb (recently upgraded from 768kb) so I am looking into why I am not receiving that. Second, I noticed from what little I know, these stats stink. Any one able to tell me why? Is this an issue with my line internally, or Verizon?

Transceiver Revision: 4.3.0.1
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 736 448
Margin (dB) 8.0 19.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 53.0 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 14.0 11.9

Any and all advice would be appreciated!

Thanks.

@tennebrae: You need to follow some steps of troubleshooting. Basically, it's plug the modem into the NID (a grey box on the side of your home typically) and use a laptop or something to see if the stats are better there. If they're better there, a new wire needs to be ran or a dedicated DSL wiring needs to be ran. You can create a new topic in the forum if you'd like help on this. Me and others can help out.

@TheArtz11: Verizon right now due to your line seems to have you provisioned at 1.5Mbps/386kbps service as they figured you wouldn't hold the full 3Mbps speed. your case seems to be a line noise issue. Create a topic in the forum and we can help see if we can boost your margins a bit, so that you get the speed higher and possibly room for FastPath as well.

The margin on the upstream is a bit on the low side, and it's lost 32kbps of sync, but if you can try to clean up the line slightly, you should be good to go. FastPath should be doable, however expect the upstream sync to drop a little more to make room for FastPath.

Prior to the 7.1Mbps upgrade my stats were

Transceiver Revision: 4.2.0.11
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Fast
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 832
Margin (dB) 12.5 11.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 33.5 21.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 8.1 11.9

After Upgrade my stats are

Transceiver Statistics
Transceiver Revision A2pB020b3.d19d
Vendor ID Code 4D54
Line Mode ADSL_G.dmt
Data Path INTERLEAVED

Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 7616 864
Margin (dB) 6.5 14.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 33.0 17.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 19.6 12.1

My Noise Margin on the downstream fluctuates from 6.5 - 7.5.

Would I be able to switch to FastPath? Also do you know why my Margins dropped lower with the speed upgrade?

The margins drop as the DSL speed increases, as well as how much noise there is on the line and based on line length as well. You are fairly close (1 and a half miles roughy) to your exchange, so if you want, you can try plugging the modem into your NID to see if the margins are higher. As of right now, the margins are too low unless you want to see a drop in the sync rate or some disconnects to even consider FastPath. See what you can do.

I have dry loop DSL, would a half ringer lower the noise margins also? I remember seeing a clear plastic similar to this »Verizon Online DSL FAQ »What is a half ringer? when the tech was troubleshooting my line for no signal. He then came inside and plugged in a tester to the DSL jack and got a busy signal.

Half Ringers may have something to do with it. I don't know enough about those to give you a good answer though, sorry.

Your line should be fine for FastPath.

Your line is close enough to take FastPath, however your upstream isn't synced properly. If you can, clean up the line a little bit and try to get a little more margin out of it, and you should be all set to go.

Probably not the place to ask but, how would I go about cleaning up my line?

Basically it takes some simple steps, the same as if you were having DSL connectivity issues. Basically, plug the modem into a NID (a grey box found on the outside of your home typically) and see if the line stats are better. If they are, then you've ruled out that something inside of your home is inserting some noise into the phone line/cable that the DSL modem is connecting through. If things are not better at the NID, it's probably just your wiring from your NID to Verizon's exchange for your home. You'll need to bring power outside to the NID for the modem, so use an extension cord and use the smallest twisted pair phone cable as well. The one that comes with the modem is a good cable to use. If you don't have a laptop, a long ethernet cable or a wireless router will work to get the transceiver stats from the modem.

Here are my stats:

Can I get fastpath? I do gaming on the xbox 360 and my ping rate could definitely be better. I also called Verizon and upgraded to 7.1 but that won't take effect until 1/28.

Also, I can't find the "Verizon Direct" forum to post my request in if you guys think I should have fastpath. Are you talking about the Verizon DSL forum, because other than that, the other 2 verizon forums are about FIOS?
