Faster?

Any chance for faster service on this line? Modem is directly connected to the NID using ~5 feet of Cat5.

Transceiver Revision: 7.1.254
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT-Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1792 448
Margin (db) 16.0 12.0
Line Attenuation (db) 57.0 18.5
Transmit Power (db/Hz) 7.0 11.0

Thanks!

Your downstream attenuation does seem pretty high compared to your upstream attenuation, so outside somewhere there is a bad piece of wiring attenuating the signal by the looks of things. The upstream attenuation is nice and low which is why I say this, so if the CAT5 cable is not at fault, your line can handle 3Mbps only if you can lower that attenuation which will raise the margins.

How bad are these stats?

Hello everyone -

I'm on an old, slow DSL plan, and before I upgrade (to 3M) and try to get switched to Fastpath, I was hoping to get some idea how borderline some of these stats are, esp on the DS side:

Transceiver Revision: 4.3.0.1
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 864 160
Margin (dB) 18.5 28.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 51.0 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 3.0 11.7

It's a long ways outside to the NID (up to the 3rd fl, across the attic, back down inside the walls). When I can rouse up long enough phone and ethernet lines, I'll do a test directly into that.

As an aside, I have been unable to convince the Vista laptop to have a temporary static IP just to connect to the Westell in bridged mode so I can test outside. (Since there's no connection to the net, it ignores what I put in and enters a 169... address.) Truly annoying.

Thanks.

Well by the looks of things, the line won't be getting 3Mbps service without ADSL2+, so you'll have to de-bridge the modem to grab the stats at the NID if the laptop refuses to work with a Static IP. Otherwise the line can get FastPath at it is.

Thanks. I did the whole modem reset, connect to laptop, and run to NID off my back porch with one phone cord. The stats are essentially the same:

Transceiver Revision: 4.3.0.1
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 864 160
Margin (dB) 18.5 30.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 50.5 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 3.1 11.5

So it looks like whatever's causing the DS line attenuation (I assume that's the only real problem) is not in my house.

I guess that leaves me in a quandary - I can either upgrade first and then badger them to fix the line and/or switch to ADSL2+ until I get what I'm paying for or try to get them to fix it and/or switch it first and then upgrade.

As far as I understand, it's pretty impossible to call up and ask for ADSL2+ (even just to see if it's available), right?

Well, the stats didn't change much at the NID so you do have a pretty long line. Now, I'm not saying ADSL2+ will get you 3Mbps, but if it is worth the shot you can try to get it. The margin looks high enough to the point where with ADSL2+ you might just squeeze by. For what I know, the phone reps won't typically be able to help you when you ask for ADSL2+. The Verizon Direct forum here may be able to give it to you though. I don't know how the line will behave, but I found with my modem that when I went from 864kbps to 1164kbps downstream, the margin only went down by a dB or two, and the upstream margin went from 160kbps to 448kbps and lost 6dB margin. My attenuation is 40dB downstream, 22.5dB upstream.

So I decided to roll the dice, upgrade and see what they can/will do to fix up the line. Here are the new stats inside:

Transceiver Revision: 4.3.0.1
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 2976 768
Margin (dB) 6.5 10.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 53.0 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 17.6 11.8

I'm starting out in the VZ Direct forum to see what they can do, if they can do anything about ADSL2+, etc.

We'll see in the meantime if I have connection issues. The last speedtest reported 2037k DS / 625k US / 36ms lat. Still a lot better than what I had a few hours ago!

Thanks.

Re: How bad are these stats?

Yup. Once the line is moved to ADSL2+ things should be all fixed up. Post up the new line stats once you've been moved if possible.

@marbrand: Your line is good to go as it's already on FastPath.

Thanks. Will do if I get moved. It seems that almost everyone that's posted in VZ Direct since my post has been replied to, and I haven't, so that's not encouraging. We'll see what happens.

okay how can you tell if it is fastpath or not? Also been getting really terrible speeds, what should i do. Had a tech out here and he says everything is good to go but still getting crappy dl speeds. UL speeds are constantly in the 750 range.

It can take some time to take care of things when there are a lot of posts and work to deal with. They don't work on the weekends so expect replies only on weekdays.

@marbrand: Under the Data Path part of the transceiver stats you'll see either Fast or Interleaved. You're on Fast so it's already set to FastPath. For poor line speeds, run a line quality test. It might be a sign of an overloaded edge router or a Juniper in the mix.

I wish people would realize that Fastpath is not a fix for any type of issue.

So, putting the Fastpath question on hold for now, my stats are borderline now that I'm provisioned at 3M. Of course VZ just wants to provision me down to 1.6M (since I'll be paying the same price with the bundle anyway), and I cannot get a straight answer on getting ADSL2:

"Ticket logs does show loop length of over 12K feet pushing the limits for 3M which will result to slowdowns and disconnects. Field technician has verified this with Central Office. They also have indicated ADSL2 may have the reach and diagnostics over extended loop lengths however it will not be helpful considering the numbers acquired from the tests that they have performed. Therefore, findings of both the field technician and CO confirms that lowering your speed package will resolve this line issue."

VZ Direct here has done as much as they can do, and now I have to either call up and just tell them to lower my provision or try to convince someone to actually get me switched to ADSL2. I'm wondering if anyone's actually managed to accomplish that?

I'm guessing that they will not do it even if they can. I asked for an elaboration on the "will not be helpful" response above, and it sounds like it's pretty much up to the central office to do it or not, and of course there's no way apparently to actually ask them anything.

Anyone had any luck actually convincing VZ to put them on ADSL2?

Here are my current stats:

Transceiver Revision: 4.3.0.1
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 2976 768
Margin (dB) 6.5 10.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 53.0 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 17.6 11.8

And here are the stats once it's downprovisioned to 1.6 (was done for 24 hours as a test):

Transceiver Revision: 4.3.0.1
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 1792 448
Margin (dB) 15.0 20.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 51.0 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 15.7 11.8

Clearly I'm stuck with 1.6 for the same price if VZ can't/won't put me on ADSL2.

Re: Need to switch between Interleave and FastPath? Part 2

Hello, I just stumbled on this Fastpath thread and wanted to know if I qualify.

Transceiver Revision: 7.2.3.0
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved

Transceiver Information Downstream Path Upstream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 3360 736
Margin (dB) 13.5 10.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 30.0 18.0
Transmit Power (dBm) 18.4 11.9

I also did some searching on FastPath on this forum and just wanted to make sure if I got it.

1.) Switching to FastPath is free
2.) FastPath improves latency but speeds won't improve
3.) Once you switch to FastPath you can't switch back to Interleave
4.) They might move you down a tier if you do switch

Is that correct?

Thank You

1: FastPath is free.
2: It improves latency, speeds will not improve.
3: You can move back to Interleaved, but Verizon simply is warning you that they won't move you back if you were to ask without really having an issue.
4: Won't happen unless you complain to them about line dropouts.

As for your line, you do qualify but you want to get your upstream fixed up, as it's out of sync. The proper sync rates should be 3360 downstream, and 864 upstream, and the margin should be at or above 10dB. If you have a NID, plug your modem into it to see if the stats are any better.

Thanks Smith6612 for the replay and help.

I didn't know what NID is but i wiki-ed it and guess its a telephone network box. If that is what it is... we have a telephone something up by the roof of our house but I don't know if its a NID or not. Is there another way to check if I can improve my stats?

Update:

I didn't do anything but now it says I have the downstream and upstream you mentioned.

I have a Westell 327w with firmware 4.4.3. Is it common for it to keep changing like that? I think this is the first time I seen it at 864 upstream.

The upstream sync shouldn't change, should be solid. If you do want to have FastPath though you can get it. Just keep an eye on the line, especially the upstream.
