Good luck with that! Comcast sells speed, not volume. I'm ok with this. I have no want or need to try and build a DVD collection via downloads.
I get movies in XviD @ 700MB each. This cap is irrelevent to me! -- Think outside the Fox... Opera |

However, the ones that drive progress are those that always try to get or devise something better. Otherwise, you would mail us envelopes with thoughts written on your mechanical typewritter while discussing weight of books limitation carried along caravans of donkeys instead of using the Internet today.
Somehow the argument that if it is ok for you we all should be happy with that is fine while if some of us want something better or more honest we are somehow wrong.
Just my opinion, of course.
I am fine with the cap, although I get also LEGAL Xvid and WMV. But it must be governed by a customer verifiable meter, not what CC says because that as seen by the FCC is not always trustworthy. -- Treason is a matter of dates |

| reply to Rob said by Rob :said by CUBS_FAN :Then it's possible that customers could get their service suspended for a year because thieves across town is using their identity. It depends. I know that Comcast identifies equipment based on the mac id # and not necessarily by the IP. So there could be potential problems. They KNOW which IP(s) have been assigned to your modem, and what it's download/upload has been. If cross town theft/spoofing was easily possible, it would already be a major/common problem, people would already be being billed for services/or accounts that didn't exist/were not ordered. As far as viri or neighboring use/abuse of YOUR computer or YOUR network, it is still YOUR responsiblity to maintain and protect it. |

1 edit | reply to TKJunkMail Just to clarify a couple things here that I've read people BSing about so far.
As for this 'Spoofing' issue, it's a total misnomer. Comcast will more than likely track you by the modem's MAC address which is NOT spoofable without a hacked modem anyhow and it's already used to link the modem to your account and tell it which HSI package has been ordered. They can easily track the bandwidth this way at the CMTS without having to look up the IP.
Concerning what services will be counted towards your bandwidth: Anything that is actually connected to the USB or Ethernet connection of your modem and nothing else. Comcast's own phone service and TV service will not be. It would be pretty stupid if they somehow counted those towards your cap as it'd undermine their own services quite quickly. And those services already have their own channels set aside in the cable network to not be affected or affect HSI services and possible overloading therein.
And for whether or not it's upload or download that's counted, it's a sum of usage in both directions. Say you downloaded 40GB in this month and only uploaded 5GB, the usage towards your cap would be 45GB. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. | reply to Vchat20 Spoofing does occur on the network. I'm not sure how widespread it is but a potential fix would be to force everyone to upgrade to a D1.1 modem or higher. BPI was broken in the original release of DOCSIS and people were able to take advantage of it (some still do.) |

| You said it yourself that it was broken in the original DOCSIS format pre-1.1. As of this point in time, even Docs1.1 is ancient history with 2.0 being widespread. I'd hazard a guess and say that most consumers are already running at the very LEAST a 1.1 capable modem, and more likely a 2.0 modem.
Regardless, the modem MAC method is really the ONLY way to track this stuff and is the same way they track your modem already to tell it which HSI package you are running. Even all these other methods like correlating ip addresses still comes down to going back to the modem's MAC to see whose account the ip was leased under. -- I swear, some people should have pace-makers installed to free up the resources. 1 edit | reply to sturmvogel I stated that *I* am ok with these new "limitations". No were did I say anyone was wrong. Since you bring it up though, anyone who thinks they can treat a residential service like a business/enterprise level internet connection is in-fact wrong.
If anyone wants to saturate a internet connection to the levels some think is ok, go pay for one! You want something better? Go get one! It isn't going to be ~$50 per month.
I'm happy because, I understand that a residential connection *IS* a residential connection and I use it as so. My connection is... well, ask anyone what my connection is like.

| reply to TKJunkMail they better supply an online tool for bw usage like most hosting providers provide as well lets you know your total usage daily without it comcast will not be able to terminate anyone on usage without proof of damages done. u can call the Better Business Bureau on this 1. or the comcast headquarters to dispute the problems with area managers. |
