why don't cable companies use fiber to the pole? -

If fiber to the home is too expensive why not do fiber to the pole or run fiber so far down every street then coax the rest of the way? Wouldn't this be more practical than telling people (oh we have fiber to the node but that node is coax which serves 2,000 people)?
