Re: Why is my IP so far away?

Ha Ha, It shows me now living in the "Hi Rent" district with a lake... er strike that, "retention pond" view out the back window!
No thanks, I'll stay where I am as that location is in a 100 year flood plain.

The "Map it" function isn't showing the street detail; but there is a geo-locator site which puts me across town. Right city (San José, California), but clear over by Monterey Highway, south, out toward Morgan Hill. About seven, or eight miles off, at least. This one is giving my zip code as, '95101', which is also way off; east of U.S. 101, near Julian and 10th. About twice as far away as Monterey Highway. I am west of Lawrence Expressway.

Ip don't map to addresses. You can get the general area. »ip-address.cc/ come close with me.
Not with me. That site pegs me on Stevenson Blvd., in Fremont, California. Never lived in the East Bay in my entire life; born, and raised, in the South Bay.

Trace route puts me in Pleasanton, California, even farther out than Fremont. Can't rely on anything based on IP address host name, or WHOIS records.

@MacLeech:

My IP address in socal.rr.com gives the following info using the ARIN whois site at »ws.arin.net/whois/

I know that, but most people don't do a Whois lookup on their address. Some tools mistakenly do that though.

Just looking at the second to last hop in his LQ report shows it's close to Reseda, CA.

# ARIN WHOIS database, last updated 2008-08-28 19:10
# Enter ? for additional hints on searching ARIN's WHOIS database.

ALL RoadRunner IP addresses - that I am aware off - are registered with the RoadRunner headquarters as the address. As such, applications that do graphical representations of traceroutes on a world map, will always place your "home" IP address in Virginia. Obviously it is not the PHYSICAL location of the IP address, it's just where the IP address is registered to.

No, it's not a VA address.

Where did you get information your home IP is in Virginia?

The last hop, which is disguised, is a VA address. So all RR customers have a VA IP address?

That's where RoadRunner's headquarters are. All IP addresses of RoadRunner nationwide are registered to that address.

I have no idea where you saw this or what you're looking at, but what you posted has your ip listed correctly..

Dns resolved 24.24.193.148 to gig14-1-resdca1-ars1.socal.rr.com

Southern Cali would probably include LA.

Shouldn't my IP be a local address? My Road Runner service has my home IP in Virginia - I'm in Los Angeles.
