| reply to Unit649 Re: Bandwidth Monitor for Computers-Suggestions?
Are there any commonly available routers/gateways that show this data via HTML?
My Linksys's don't, but then again they don't have much logging at all.
I gave my parents a D-link router which did collect some pretty good stats and logs - much better than the Linksys - but it died pretty quickly.
If I have to buy and flash the "Linux" Linksys box, I guess I will but jeez this really should be a basic stat, available via HTML. |

| Most Linksys units (at least older ones, as in the original "blue box" wrt54g's) can be flashed with some sort of custom firmware. I have DD-WRT on my WRT54G v8 (not Linux based...using the micro version). Also on an older v6 router. Only problem is BitTorrent and keeping up with the cable connection over wireless. Otherwise should be fine. |

| reply to Unit649 said by Unit649 :Linksys, come up with a cheap one? They essentially already have. As I've already noted three times so far, you're going to get enterprise level support and bandwidth use reporting/monitoring if you go with any WRT54GL/GS/G/e.t.c. flashed with Tomato or DD-WRT.
That's a whopping $50-60 bucks. I spent $70 on my WRT54G-TM which has double the RAM, double the ROM, a flash JTAG and PoE support, as well as a heatsink soldered on for oc'ing it to 233 MHz stable all the time.
Again, this is such a great enterprise-level solution for people, and the WRT54G is such a high penetration device, it's hard to argue against it as the comprehensive solution for monitoring all bandwidth. -- "Some people never see the light till it shines thru bullet holes." -Bruce Cockburn

| Yep. I'm just wondering if this kind of thing "sweeps ISPs" now that Comcast has done it, if they will make something like it standard on the newer routers.
You know, for those not as savvy who fear stuff like "flashing firmware" |

You know, for those not as savvy who fear stuff like "flashing firmware" Or some of us who can't flash the firmware. I now have the Linksys WRTU54G-TM for T-Mobile's @Home service. I've read that some people have successfully loaded the opensource software but in doing so they lose the voice functions, which is the whole point in having this router. To maintain the voice functions, we must use the standard Linksys software made available for it specifically. -- *************** I think computer viruses should count as life. This would put more pressure on Comcast to provide their subscribers with a tool that allows us to see our bandwidth consumption directly from Comcast. |

To maintain the voice functions, we must use the standard Linksys software made available for it specifically. Ironically I just mentioned that that's the exact router I'm using. Granted, I don't use the voice software (have no use for it), but you're sitting on top of a faster-than-normal and more-ram-than normal WRT54GS with that one.
Flashing is a bit complicated since it requires a JTAG, but you can certainly do it.
I guess the bandwidth monitoring stuff will catch on for consumer-level hardware, but until then, you're gonna have to make do with really marginal client-side monitoring, or 3rd party firmware which has it built in, or setting up a *nix server and getting Cacti or something running. I've tried all three in the past few years.
It'd be easiest if Comcast just opened the same tools they use to monitor us in the first place to the customers. -- "Some people never see the light till it shines thru bullet holes." -Bruce Cockburn

Having the SIM card(s) and voice capability is the whole point of this router. Otherwise you could just go buy a regular Linksys. -- *************** I think computer viruses should count as life. | reply to Unit649 I also have Tomato running on my Buffalo router and love the bandwidth monitoring. I just installed the firmware, so I'm wondering since I only have 2mb free RAM in my router after the upgrade, will I run out of ram running the bandwidth monitoring eventually? I tried using a samba share with the router bandwidth option, but it seemed sluggish and would time out while trying to post data at the same time I was checking it. Anyone with Tomato wanna comment? |

| reply to Unit649 With the PS3 and Xbox 360 in the house this is unfeasable for people to do on their own... If I wasent a network admin I wouldnt know how to install firmware on my router to determine if im over or not... not to mention the mistakes that comcast could make... believe me they do...
So I installed DDWRT on my 310N linksys to monitor the whole network... Comcast needs to make the effort if they are going to do bandwidth limitations to make their own meter available to the public...
Sad but tru... |

| reply to Unit649 For those of you who opt to use Cacti (aka rrdtool -- this is the back-end which does the graphing / data storage), don't forget that the default settings for rrdtool will AVERAGE the data over time. This WILL SKEW your monthly bandwidth numbers!
I strongly suggest you read the rrd-beginners guide to familiarize yourself with it. In cacti, the rrdtool default settings (aka steps/rows) can be easily changed. Plenty of posts on the Cacti forums on how to properly increase it so it'll keep a month of granular data, etc.
I also created the Beta Cacti Windows installer -- If it's not on Google, then it doesn't exist.

| reply to Unit649 I have a linksys wrt54g router, have the DD-WRT firmware installed, and use a program called RFlow Collector to monitor my bandwidth on my network. Works really nice once set up. Here is a screen shot, totals have been reset yesterday since it was the 1st. |
