1 edit | IMPORTANT: If you are planning on canceling because of caps
Consider doing this first if you're planning on getting DSL or fiber instead...
Spend one month using your connection as much as possible. Download and upload 24/7. Intentionally surpass the cap, and by a large margin. Then, when Comcast cancels your account because of this, sign up for DSL.
That way you are protesting this cap instead of just calling them up like a wimp and telling them to cancel your account, and you're getting one last month of fast speeds before having to go to slower but cap-free DSL. |

Maybe Comcast should have done a little PR work before doing this with ads like "Do You Want To Share A Node With An Idiot?" I share a node with numerous heavy users in an apartment complex, including myself.
I never see less than my rated speed. Nodes going over capacity is a rare and exaggerated event and when it happens it must happen for mere minutes or maybe even less since I can never notice slower speeds.
Also, I think I can live with getting 10 Mbps instead of 15 Mbps for a few minutes every once in a while if it means no bandwidth caps

What, you think a DSL provider is just going to pack up one day and shut down their entire network in the middle of a 12-month period with no advance warning? |

Yes, on real highways like the Autobahn, like Comcast likes to look like when it talks about its speeds.
We are not exceeding the speed, which is 8 Mbit/sec, we are using it. Nowhere on the freeways I see says: Speed limit 65, but you can use that only 3 hours a day. -- Treason is a matter of dates |

@gci.com | reply to Xizer Do you guys realize what the bandwidth costs are at the wholesale level? Maybe you should look into it. you are unlikely to get less than $15 per Mbit on Level 3 and ATT 2 of Comcasts biggest transit provders than that is with gigabit commitments. |

Some of us use freeways and regular roads where school zones are an exception, not a majority of the distance traveled.
Speed limit on the freeways is 55/65 with no restrictions unless road work or if you happen to drive a truck. -- Treason is a matter of dates |

1 edit | reply to Rob Maybe it's not "them" (ComCast (just in case you were confused) but others on your node, "getting thier monies worth" or "trying to get capped" or any of the other reasons for using extreme bandwidth. I'm not saying if you never hit full speed comcast shouldn't upgrade/split your node*.............but as we see in this thread some people believe, that having a car that goes 160, means they MUST drive that way, not on the autobahn, but in school zones, arterials etc., some just to show they can. That also defines abuse. * however engineering/building/ and commisioning a plant change takes far longer than it takes 10-20 users to decide to go "all out" |

No. Those are special conditions that warrant restricted traffic flow and slower speed limits.
However, the goverment(s) move to correct those and improve the speeds. They do not create permanent rules while letting the roads fall into disrepair and ignore traffic growth. Most times. -- Treason is a matter of dates |

Did I say to drive 160 in school zone ?
I have a 8 Mbit connection I pay for. Nowhere in the contract does it say that I can use that connection at 8 Mbit only 3 hrs a day.
My car is rated at 160. Speed limit is around here 55 MPH. I can drive 55 MPH 24/7 and there will be no cop around to tell me that I am "abusing" the road driving 24/7 @ 55 MPH and I could drive 35 24/7 or 55 only 3 hrs a day. I pay a flat fee to the county to use the road (as I pay Comcast for access) and I pay for gas (as I pay electricity for my computer). -- Treason is a matter of dates |
