| [northeast] Is my ONT grounded???
Hi everyone. Everyone is very helpful here, so I hope someone can answer my question. I think this question may sound silly to some of you, but nevertheless..
How can I tell if my ONT is grounded? Mine is indoors in my basement. It is plugged in with a three prong plug into a grounded outlet, and does this mean it's grounded?
Thanks in advance! |

| can u post a pic....is the green ground wire (that starts under the battery) attached at the bottom of the ont, is the 3 prong plug..plugged into the side of the ont, also do you know for sure if the outlet has a working ground (did you test it) if it was wired wrong, then you might think that it is grounded, but it is not..
thanks |

The three prong plug is a proper ground, as long as it is plugged into a correctly wired grounded outlet.
edit: In searching the forum, there seems to be disagreement about whether the 3 prong cord on the "all-in-one" interior ONT is an adequate ground. |

1 edit | reply to asdfasdfg My ont is supposed to be grounded by the 3 prong plug. They have a green wire going from the ont on the bottom to the bbu which attaches to the 3 prong plug. And verizon did not test this as I know for sure that plug never had its ground hooked up. When i moved in i noticed this and just never fixed it as the only thing that ran to it was a 2 prong sprinkler timer. After they hooked up the ont and about a week later i remembered that plug never had a ground so I fixed it. easy fix since the plus is on the other side of the breaker box. |

| reply to jondevon The bottom center of the ONT has 2 grounding lugs. At least 1 of them should be physically bonded to an earth ground in some shape, form or fashion.

That one is not.

1 edit | Thanks for the help everyone! Ok, so anyway, YES the outlet has been tested and is grounded, and YES the ONT's plug is a three pronger.
Strangely enough, the part of the ONT that says "CRAFT? ACCESS ONLY" was never bolted shut after the installation, so I can easily open it (I got curious). I was surprised to see the laser right in there. And the fiber cable is so thin! Ah, the wonders of technology.
Back on topic, if the 2 grounding lugs you speak of are the the 2 copper colored busbar-looking things on the bottom, then yes there is a green cable attached and looks properly grounded if I follow it outside to the stake in the, well, erm.... ground.
Thanks again for all the help! And if in some way it isn't grounded, and a super-high voltage manages to come through and magically arc across to my WIRELESS laptop, the worst thing that happens is that I die, right? I guess I won't be bothering anyone here again if that happens, eh? XD
And sometimes I think MoreFiber is stalking my silly question threads! |

| reply to jondevon I have an ALCATEL ONT and the power supply/BBU connection to the AC outlet does NOT have a grounding prong on the plug (must be double insulated). The ONT itself has a #10 wire from a grounding lug, in the telco access area, going to the Copper cold water service pipe about 2' from where it comes through the foundation.
I think the grounding prong on the power supply plug, if there is one, is for the PSU/BBU ONLY and not for BONDING of the ONT to earth. If you look at the interconnects between the PSU/BBU and the ONT, there is no provision for a ground in the cable bundle - just DC (+) & (-) and the handshake lines.
Wile in practicality, there does not seem to be a real need to bond the ONT, I would imagine that the NEC covers it somewhere in its specs - just a guess. -- Never raise your hands to your kids. It leaves your groin unprotected. -- Red Buttons |
