4 edits | OZO's WU6.bat file for controlling Microsoft Update & BITS
WU6.bat file allows to connect to Microsoft Update site and to retrieve all necessary updates from there as usual. Additionally, the rest of the time it keeps unnecessary services ("Microsoft Update" - wuauserv and, if required, BITS service) stopped and with startup type set to 'disabled', eliminating extra resource usage and stopping unwanted updates that may be pushed on computer via different Automatic Update mechanisms.
I've updated this post on August 31st, @02:35PM to show the code of OZO's v2.3. and changed internal references from 'Windows Update' to 'Microsoft Update'. Thanks for the suggestion SunDog.
Edit: Please check your timestamp to be sure that you have the latest version (v2.3).
OZO's zipped file is also available below in this thead.
Copy the code and save it as WU6.bat to a location of your choice. |

1 edit | reply to SUMware SUMware - thank you for re-posting the BAT file.
I see that the latest WU6.bat somehow disappeared from the post that should contain it. So, I'll re-post it here. It's v.2.3 and it has more robust procedure for stopping those services (yes, they may insist on their run ).

2 edits | reply to SUMware Just d/l'd and tested this and, as expected, it worked perfectly. Whilst deleting an old copy I noticed that I first used it on 4 July 2005. In other words have been using this little .bat file for over three years without the slightest problem.
Thanks OZO... |

1 edit | reply to OZO I've been using this on XP since basically day one. It's perfect...
What about Vista? Can this be used on that 'OS'
/edit - nope - Vista expects you to run the Windows Update app, and denies use of the website to Vista users.

| reply to OZO Ah, those halcyon days . . . . when a person could at leisure stroll by a Microsoft or Windows Update website unfettered, unencumbered, and unvalidated.
(Hmmm. I just reminded myself of the movie "Gattica").
Oh well. Can't live in the past.
Great file to have on hand though, OZO. Just because.
Thanks! U-da-man! |

| reply to SUMware I am clueless on this bat file. Is this .bat file suppose to enable the automatic update service, then disable it after it is complete. Or is managing some other related "hidden" automatic update feature? And can this .bat work if I just use manually? |

2 edits | reply to SUMware Thanks for the update. Been using the original Windows Update.bat since it first came out.
However, shouldn't this .bat file should really be called Microsoft Update as it goes to the Microsoft Update site and not to the Windows Update site?
The Microsoft Update site updates the OS and Office products and the Windows Update site updates only the OS (for the most part). |

OZO, wanna change the appropriate .bat syntax? |

| Yes, you're right. It should be fixed and thanks for that.
The name comes from the beginning of this "recovery" effort from the m$'s push to force users to run "wuauserv" service all the time. You may read more about it in this thread - Windows Update v.5 - how to run it manually. (OMG, it was 4 years ago! ) -- Keep it simple, it'll become complex by itself... |
