Qwest's Unofficial 250 GB Data Cap @ TorrentFreak

said by Torrentfreak :

Qwest’s Unofficial 250 GB Data Cap | TorrentFreak:
Today, Comcast officially announced a 250 GB cap, while threatening to disconnect users who exceed this limit more than once. Comcast is taking the heat once again, but they are not the only ISP that limits its users. Other ISPs, Qwest being one of them, have exactly the same policy - and the same threats.

Did a quick Google search and found that many, many Qwest resellers or other Qwest service description are still describing Qwest as an unlimited service.

See THIS PAGE which says,
Qwest DSL High Speed

Qwest DSL with MSN Premium offers unlimited MSN Premium Internet access. Customers can select from one of many ISP partners for a secure, dedicated connection that's anywhere from to 50 to 90 times faster than 56 Kbps dial-up at about the same price. MSN Premium includes Parental Controls, Virus Guard, Pop-up guard, MSN Money Plus and Encarta Premium.
or THIS PAGE which says,
All of Qwest's High-Speed Internet plans feature the QuickConnect™ installation kit, unlimited Internet usage, 2GB of e-mail storage, and quality technical support 24 hours day, seven days a week! You also get top-of-the-line protection from viruses and undesired Internet content with firewall, anti-virus safeguards, parental controls, and more.

There are limits yes. What are they? I still think they are very high. I watch video and do some downloads. The one thing I do not do is download more than I can watch or listen to. So my connection is not maxed 24/7. It does get maxed some months though for me. Other months work too much and hardly use it. Pushing over 100gb this month have more time off. My personal servers are down right now however or that total would be higher. Other lame months may hit 5 gb.

Not to split hairs, but is "unlimited usage"(always on) the same thing as "unlimited downloads"?

Nah, always on just means you CAN use the full bandwidth 24/7, not that you're ALLOWED to. I do like their 3-strikes policy, though. The one place where it's really appropriate.

Article is inaccurate EUP is clearly varying from location to location based on need, possibly what package you have. I've been doing 500gb a month for the last couple months and haven't heard a thing. Its not as clear cut as 250gb.

But it does not say "always on" - which I would agree means it's available, but not necessarily "unlimited" in usage.

From the above information, it clearly states:

quote:
unlimited MSN Premium Internet access.
and
quote:
unlimited Internet usage,
That clearly is different than saying "always on" - as in always available. The above is saying usage in one of them. Usage and availability is often separated.

But this is a moot point on what we think it means.

If you use enough bandwidth- you will get a letter. However, it's significantly higher than 250GB. Much higher if you're on FTTN.

That may change in the future, but the poist stating that they have an "unofficial 250GB Data Cap" is completely inaccurate.

So it's an invisicap, which is just like Comcast's invisicap plus one extra warning attached ... not 250GB ... something.

Think I almost prefer the invisi cap with the warnings. A set limit is just that, Maybe the invisi cap is just a bell curve knocking off the extreme users. If the bell curve of use goes up maybe the cap does also.

thats why the rest of the world doesnt like it, its an unknown what if its some unfair bell curve that people who are getting ripped off by paying so much money for email are screwing over the rest of us

fyi.. I have a friend that was contacted by Qwest and it was double Comcasts 250.... and based on his meter it was only downloads only they cared about - he's confirmed that since he's stayed just under that - and hasn't been contacted again. He got a letter as well as the webpage warning

Qwest's ??? GB Data Cap

Thanks for that. Real data is so much more useful than some of the fluff (including the title of the news article).

Comcast's "Invisible Cap" has been running somewhere above 400 GB, too -- my guess is that it's been about a year since I've seen anyone who was quoted an amount that was lower than 400 GB.

Comcast's 250 GB cap is just the first of two thresholds that Comcast says must be met before getting a warning or terminated. The second threshold is that the user must also be one of Comcast's "top users" -- which they don't really define anywhere in their documents on the subject, but press quotes might lead people to conclude it means that they are in the top 1%.
