 | The point is that I can bring up the VPN and it works. Same machine, same browser, same cache, same everything.
Plus I have packet traces which clearly show the RST being returned instead of the 1st data back from the remote site. I get the SYN-ACK, my side sends an ACK for that and then I get an RST.

| I know what your point is, regarding the shared assets through the VPN, but on more than one occasion I've experienced a PHP site doing as you've explained, because of a simple corruption of cookies. {i.e., you previously closed your browser when logged in, and you can't get the site to load properly upon return.}
I'm not saying without a doubt that's your problem, but you asked for ideas.
