Unfortunately, Clearwire leasing of school spectrum is not technically WiMax. It actually uses a technology by NextNet that was acquired by Motorola.
The current Clearwire business model is the leasing of FCC allocated spectrum to school districts and while providing "free" internet to the schools, they in turn resell the bandwidth to subs.
Bell South tried this just prior to the ATT merger as a hedge against inroads Clearwire was making in the local DSL markets.
Clearwire's WiMax plans are pretty much dependent on Sprint/Xohm. When I had Clearwire, I asked them how soon they were going to upgrade everyone to WiMax, the answer I got was "as soon as they have enough money". That was 4 years ago. |

Hingham, MA | WiMax could be deployed on school spectrum, couldn't it?
Of course, there could be the issue of band incompatibility with the devices they're planning on releasing. |
