| Bell Now "Throttling" FTP As Well...
For the last few nights I have been updating my freeware aircraft and scenery for use in Flight Simulator 2004 and X, and downloading a few new ones from:
www.avsim.com
They, like about 90% of most sites, use a http link to an FTP server. My speeds are now throttled between about 5pm at night to about 1am, however the speed does go up to about 60kbs from 30kbs at 1am, then at 2 am they allow me to have my full speed.
Has anyone seen this before? Is this another nice suprise from this horrible company? If this is the case it is utterly disgusting, this isn't file sharing, it's simple internet browser downloading.
It feels great to be had by the testicles knowing you can't just leave them and get un-molested service elsewhere because they monopolize the entire DSL backbone and put boxes where ever they want to. |

  SSLftp throttled

Has anyone seen this before? Yes a few have complained about throttled FTP, but those that did usually were using an encrytped connection (SSL FTP) over non-standard ports. |

| reply to Andrew1976 I have seen the exact same problem. I deal through inter.net and they seem to be as in the dark as their customers.
I upload numerous 25 mb FTP files during the day, it's around 5 pm they start slowing to near 0. They normally take a few minutes but now they pile up til 3 or 4 are running at once.
Yesterday I looked and saw 3 uploads running via ncftpbatch. 2 were showing speeds of 0.0, the other one about 1.2 kb/sec.
If I was one of the resellers, I'd be so peeved at Bell for changing the package I deliver to my own customers and not telling me anything....

1 edit | reply to Andrew1976 I had the same problem last night trying to download some files from my dedicated server. I was capped @ around 35-40 kB\s.
FTP and HTTP SSL was throttled using electronicbox.
I tried Acanac, i did not had that problem, so looks like something is going on.
I dont know what is the point of High Speed Internet any more in Canada.
... i was downloading 2 gb backup mysql file for hours ... thanks bell! |

Edit:Just because MS says 21 does not make it standard. |

Port 21 *IS* the standard port. It's the port that all FTP servers default to, and it's registered with IANA as port 21. That port has been assigned to FTP. This has nothing to do with Microsoft. It's a reserved port:

| reply to damir I pulled my modem plug for 15 minutes, and disconnected/reconnected PPoE. I got a new external IP address. However, behavior has not changed: I seem to be throttled to about 4.1 k/s for all ftp outbound connections. Don't know what it means except maybe, it's across the board for all users, at least for my region.
For most of the day I use it, till about 5 pm, I get about 50-60 kb/s available.
I do have some P2P going on, all seeding no download, none of it record industry or movie industry material. But, I can see no throttling on my P2P, only to my FTP !
I throttle my P2P seeding myself to save some b/w for my other use, to 23k/s. And it always performs up to that limit.
Where's the best place to find out if it's happening the same at Rogers (my available cable option)? Obviously they are colluding to restrict competition here, but probably not to that extent !!

| reply to RC Further playing with it: it looks like there's a throttle on all total bandwidth for all types of upload, of 30 k/s.
If I throttle P2P back, then I get more FTP bandwidth.
Between about 5 and 11 it seems, tho' I'm not positive of the end time. I don't spend my life on the computer |

| reply to Andrew1976 Whatever they are doing it needs to be clearly stated that it will be done in the license agreement or EULA, and they should be required by law to inform thier customers via snail mail that these MASSSIVE changes will be implemented in the near future. This whole affair is literally class action law suite material.
The whole service is now completely pointless for gamers who enjoy downloading the latest demo out for the PC, because almost all of the host file sites use FTP in some way or the other, it's the industry standard. I can't understand how such a large corporation is getting away with this without being penalized.
Hopefully the CRTC will actually make itself usefull for once in the history of it's entire existence, and start defending the rights of Canadian broadband consumers. This is no longer a "BitTorrent file sharing grey area", it now effects ALL consumers who subscribe to so called "High Speed" internet in Canada. |

Between about 5 and 11 it seems, tho' I'm not positive of the end time. I don't spend my life on the computer There is a known issue that secure FTP is throttled when you are using any applications that fall under throttling rules (ie Bit Torrents). So if you have some torrents going, and are trying to download stuff from an FTP site, both applications only have 30KBs of bandwidth to share. If you turn of your torrents, your FTP downloads 'should' go back up to full speed, but I've found often times you need to reboot the modem to get a new IP in order to be sure.
Apparently this will be a tricky one for them(Bell and their DPI vendor) to fix. And amazingly, no one discovered this until about 2 months ago. --

| reply to Andrew1976 Suggestion for Andrew, RC
If you reply to Deadpool make sure you are compensated for your time and efforts in debugging their issues with their DPI. As a customer of theirs they should be providing you a service as you are paying them. If you are providing a service for them then you deserve compensation, either monetary or otherwise (free years worth of DSL for example).
Regards. |
