All 'pacbell.net' (my email domain) email has to be picked up through 'pop.att.yahoo.com'. They actually prefer that we also use 'smtp.att.yahoo.com'; but Yahoo! doesn't want us using their server as a "Smarthost". There is actually no current prohibition against running an MTA in the 'at&t Yahoo! HSI' AUP/TOS, but if one does so, using the ISP server as a "Smarthost" is essential. Yahoo! requires each sender email address, which is not the same as the one used to log in to the server, be "verified". The procedure is not onerous, but there is a limit of ten email addresses allowed, not associated with the accounts.

It has caused numerous problems for several customers. Anyway, because of that particular issue, I recommend against a Yahoo! co-branded account, if you can avoid it.

I seriously regret having migrated my SBC DSL to, "SBC Yahoo! DSL Service". I had the option not to, and should have opted not to. Can't be undone, now; and new signups for AT&T DSL are automatically co-branded "at&t Yahoo! HSI" accounts. No way out.

But I like to get free stuff, so for a while I had the MSN Premium from Verizon. I cancelled that and switched to Yahoo. I used more of those features, like the Yahoo Launchcast Plus Radio and the throw away addresses on the Yahoo account.

I had a heck of a time getting the MSN Premium by Verizon off my MSN account. And like you said, you're tied down and can't get any of the new stuff when your account is tied in like that. I had to call them and get them to fix it.

You can live without all this stuff. These services are beneficial if they let you upgrade your existing free Hotmail/Yahoo/AOL accounts to the paid versions (or take existing paid version and make them free). MSN Premium was great for that reason. At the time, that meant more storage space, higher attachment limit, no expiration from inactivity, a superior junk-mail filter, and a free license to McAfee Antivirus and firewall products. And you don't lose your Hotmail e-mail accounts if you cancel Verizon...it just converts to the free version.

I'm still interested if getting "Verizon with Yahoo" lets you convert free Yahoo e-mail accounts to the paid version. From the description, it sounds like you use your verizon.net e-mail addresses with a Yahoo frontend.

And the AOL offering...is it basically like the "bring your own broadband" version of AOL in which it allows use of the AOL Browser with all of your AOL e-mail accounts? No matter how fully featured these service's appear to be, it always comes with much much more than we need. I have MSN premium, had it since they first came out with it. The only thing I ever found a use for was when they gave us free MLB games, that was good for a year, now gone. Everything associated with MSN premium is gone, I deleted everything. I'm MSN premium in name only.

I can't think of anything I would need from these so called "premium services" that I can't get without them. I can get specific as to need and eliminate the bloat with a simple connection. I use windows live email because I like the multiple account interface. I had no problem setting it up even though I have MSN premium.

BTW: AOL is the absolute worst, they take over everything.
