Sukunai : Posting a cross post purpose comment here.

I have the Nintendo DS (but I am willing to consider this a PSP type comment too).

We all know that a lot of old school looking board game appearing computer wargames are notorious for low tech needing computational power.

And yet I hear it constantly "oh we can't afford to make games for console".

That's such utter crap.

All one needs to do, is go on a Nintendo based site, and witness the stream of games released for this particular hand held console, and it is VERY clear, that everyone and their aunt is making games at light speed, and the games are often such incredible mind numbing levels of blandness and garbage like crud.

But it wasn't like these companies were able to just dump this crud on the market for free.

So, are we to accept that a company KNOWN for wargaming excellence, can't make a simple toned down version wargame that can compete with a Pet simulator?

If they can produce titles like War in the Pacific (which reaches entirely anal levels of detail) and titles like Strategic Command which has about the simplest interface in PC wargaming, then they can master the process of putting a wargame on the hand held too.

Otherwise it is fair to claim that wargame makers are morons when it comes to basic marketing, even if they can get the stats correct for a Tiger tank.

Recently installed an Iraq version of Close Combat, but can't get the map to display objective flags. Also played Panzer General and many QQP games.
royhandy : Steel Panthers will always hold a place in my heart. The Great Naval Battles games were fun. Harpoon was an awesome game. Same with all of the old SSI wargames on the older Apple machines. I think the most fun I ever had with a war game was The Hunt For Red October on a Tandy 1000 TX ca. 1991. I still play Close Combat 3 every once in a while.

I have three Avalon Hill bookcase games sitting on my shelf...Panzergruppe Guderian, Arab Israeli Wars, and Panzer Leader. Somewhere in a box a copy of Squad Leader sits unplayed. I used to have more but I sold my collection to a friend about 5 years ago. These are all I've been able to find at the local garage sales/flea markets.

--
the wheels of your life are slowly falling off

Mchart : Definatly. Steel Panthers: World at War was one of my most heavily played games back in the day. I still enjoy it today, but it is hard enjoying it with the extremely old graphics and mighty low resolution.

The Close Combat's were classics as well. I used to play those games quite a bit but as stated, it is hard getting myself to play those types of games anymore when they just like look like a pile of mud now. The only wargame i've been playing at all recently is IL2. Of course, this is a simulation.
