tipstir : There is only a free version of the Anti-virus, but if you really want something that works use this:

I own both the free and paid versions. I like SDA better as it against spyware and viruses. The way the PC Tools folks do it you use the free one then buy the full versions but to me the free and full are about the same except for some features. Lower on system too doesn't hose, hog it down.

The link gives you the full starter edition which is basically the full commercial version of Spyware Doctor with the free anti-virus which is full version 6. SD only has two features enabled but to me compared to the full one it just good enough it still blocks and scans the same. Updates for free and everything can be scheduled.

NOD32 2.71 or ESET 3.x NDO32 doesn't protect anymore. Forget the Smart Security I had tried both HOme and Business neither protected as good as PC Tools. I also use PCTools Threat Fire (Behavioral Anti-Spyware/Anti-Viruse Layer, Firewall Plus both are free).

Automatic updates ONLY installs the CRITICAL updates, those that are required to protect the system from attacks and without a firewall your PC is a prime target. The System Restore feature does not take up a significant amount of hard disk space, it takes a snapshot of the system state, it doesn't back it up the hard drive.

The vast majority of home computer users never back up their systems and have no clue what a disk image is, the windows features are the only protection they have. If you actually had 20+ years of experience you wouldn't be telling people to disable them on their home computers. You're expecting the average home user to have the same awareness of an IT professional, which doesn't happen in the real world.

While searching for an answer to the problem with the DIR I picked something up Saturday evening. This spyware is controlling Firefox and IE. Click on some links and it opens to what you want, while other links are directed to a site that wants to sell something associated with your search or to a page which has nothing to do with the link but contains some wording from the link you tried to open and other links open a blank page. Wits end here, I know this is not a router problem and I will go back to that after I try to fix this. I would appreciate any help if someone knows of another software which could help. I do not not want to do a clean install. I have programs which are backed up to an external HD (and is not connected to the PC at this time) I just do not want to risk never being able to use them again.

tipstir : Like I had said prior everyone is going to have different experiences with FireFox. Out of the box experience is set to the defaults. All the Fire Tune does is make is run to the best performance settings. So if you say your Fire Fox runs okay, how do you know that? You're using the default settings. Any it sounds like when 3.0 or 3.01 was installed you didn't remove 2.0. That's why they you can't update over 2 to 3. I think the scientist over on the Fire Fox side have fix the issue.

boble88 : D-Link DIR-655 A2 using firmware 1.11, after upgrading to 1.2 some of the tabs could not be open (such as advanced, system etc) and my wireless signal to my PS3 went from the high 80% range to the mid 50% range. Went back to 1.11 my signal strength went up and all features could be accessed. Is 1.2 broke or is it on my end. Also, after playing with the 1.11 to 1.20 and back to 1.11 firmware again I upgraded Firefox 2.0 to 3.0. Now I cannot access the Dlink router. I get to the login page enter my password and after 30 seconds a message comes up stating that the network is down click "OK" to try again. Went back to Firefox 2.0 and naturally everything works fine. I did start the browser in safe mode and I could log into the router with no problems. I do have the download helper extension and I did disable it but I could not log in. Why now? Is it D-LINK or Mozilla or a combination of both.
