What would you do if your internet went out for a few days? Cause it sounds like you live on internet. Try living on dial up. You will know how we feel.
*I* have! I know what it's like...
Got REAL sick and tired of downloading things overnight only to find them disconnected, corrupted, or just a waste of bandwidth to download.
Forget the whole tying up the phone line thing.

I popped for "faster" service - screw price!
Today, that service clocks in at 16mbps(17.3mbps actual).

Out for a few days?
I have turned the computers off myself for a few days, what's your point?
I live because of the my laptops and the internet - long depressing story.

Don't judge, many people started without internet, got dialup, and stepped up.
I know it sucks for some people in that no other source is available. I have relatives that get 24kbps on a good day!
They would kill to get even better dialup, let alone DSL or cable.

Spoiled? How so?
I live in suburbia.
Like... 14 miles from San Francisco in The East Bay.
How close are you to civilization?

Someone in your family apparently made the decision to live away from the city buzz - so you get to use Sat.
Well, that doesn't make you depraved, does it?
YOU would be considered spoiled with your speeds by some of my relatives - Sat is not doable for them.

Perspectives my friend.

Unless you play PC games, some of the patches developers push out can be as small as 10MB or as large as 300MB.

Yeah, some of the patches are nuts!

I was a beta tester for America's Army - last install I had to down load was a gig - took 5-6 hours - did it over night. Most installs were at least 350 megs - took about 4 hours. No biggie and files that are 40-50 megs are less than 1 hour.

U-Verse. 6/1 for $35. How much do you pay?

reply to dadkins
no I have not,nor will I ever even if I could.I don't waste my time playing games.I don't need a connection more than 2 or 3 meg.like i said before any more than that is a waste. It sux that they keep pushing more speed where they already have fast connections, and don't worry about their rural customer's that have dialup and that's it.very bad for business because tellcos are loosing more and more voice customer's to voip,as i cancelled my at&t voice service today. They better start worrying about extending their dsl because before long that will be all they have

Why would anyone want DSL when cable is beating it in every market??? When I shop for broadband, I want speed, speed, speed, and did I mention Speed.... Charter has 16Mbps/2 Att has 6Mbps/512 hahahah what a joke. charter gets my money hands down. Better luck next time Att.
Not really. Your modem might be open to 16 Mbps, but the network can't sustain that if even 3-4 people in your neighborhood try to hit that speed.

I don't know how AT&T has provisioned its services -- but my bet is that their users hit their subscribed speeds more often, and that they can sustain them longer.

Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare.

yea people like you are the cause for the new usage caps...anything over 6 meg is nothing but a waste of bandwidth and money
Not necessarily. Some people buy 2-seater sports cars because they're fast. Some people buy 8-seater vans because they hold everyone.

Different strokes for different folks.

Where the broadband industry has done a disservice is that they haven't educated the public as to the difference -- so the public only looks at one number.

Watch what happens when cable starts up with bandwidth caps and (hopefully) telcos don't. Now consumers have two meaningful numbers to consider. That's a good thing.

or the cost of seeing a popup flash advertisement
You know, you have a great point! Why should I have to 'spend' my limited bandwith on an advertisement I didn't request to download?

I think there is a new issue for Congress to take up...maybe similar to the "Do Not Call" list, a "DO NOT ADVERTISE VIA WEB PAGE" list.

I don't want my valuable bits used up and costing me money when I go over my limit because some stupid advertiser shoves an ad down my limited bandwith!

As much as I agree with you, the reality is that most of your favorite sites are supported by ad dollars. Would you rather have limited content, ads, or pay for every site you visit?

In the meantime, try Firefox + Adblock Plus.

Look friend, YOU chose to be rural.
One of the things about being rural is none of the city-esk perks.

Broadband seems to be at or near the top of that list of things you get to forfeit.
Moving to a place out of town and then trying to blame a service provider of being uncaring is... not right.

Common sense dictates that if you are out there, and want DSL or cable, and the providers aren't going to string it up for you - you get to move to a served area.

If you do not want higher speeds, they do offer DSL at 768k or 1.5mbps for kinda cheap.
Once moved in, call AT&T, Verizon, or Embarq.
They will be glad to help you get online.

Call them again and ask why they aren't serving your house and see what they tell you.
Then, you can come back here and tell us all what they said.

Charter ???? You've got to be kidding. Around here the system is down at least two days a week. With ATT I've been down twice in 6 years. One was a router upgrade in Chicago that went a miss, the other pots went down do to a traffic accident.

24kbps on a good day is not great friend.
That and it drops constantly.

See, you are calling us spoiled and you have WAY better than my relatives.
I'll see if I can get my cousin to come here and post a speed test for you...

Who's bright idea was it to get that $80 Sat internet then?
Why did that Sat internet get hooked up?
Break the contract, pay the ETF and go back to dialup if it is so much better. LOL!

Knock yerself out pal!
Still though, all the whining here is not doing anything towards getting AT&T or whomever to extend that DSL, is it?

Damn dude!

Re: Speed boost?

you fail to mention:
-distance
-'flavor' (adsl, idsl, vdsl, etc.)

if you spent sometime researching, you can quickly find out varsious versions of dsl can do 10mbps (look at uverse, what do you think gets the signal over the copper in the last leg to your house?) or even 50mpbs, probably higher.
