I live in a relatively rural area, but not so far into the sticks that I have no broadband options. My closest neighbor to my left is a half a mile down the road, and up until a few years ago I had no neighbor on the right, across the street there is a house on a huge hill about 300 ft away. We have 3 1/2 acres of land, and live in a town with a population of 5,500, with no real stores, 1 gas station, 2 bars and 1.5 traffic lights. I love my 15Mb Road Runner and wouldn't dream of getting knocked back down to 6Mb, 6Mb broadband is like so 2004, 15Mb is too slow for this day and age IMO, but PowerBoost with speeds of upwards of 30Mb are great. I often work on other peoples computers, and when downloading a year or 2 worth of Windows Updates, there is a huge difference between a 6Mb connection and a 15Mb connection. Downloading music and especially TV shows from iTunes also benefits greatly from faster connections.
It's pretty cool though, here I am living about 20 miles outside of Buffalo, NY enjoying the benefits of rural America, being able to hear the cows moo while downloading at 15Mbps rather than crappy satellite internet, for a hell of a lot less money.

| Ok smart guy, how do you know 6Mb is more than enough for 99.99999% of the population? To make a stupid statement like that, is uncalled for. Technological advancements are dependent on what consumers demand. If we don't demand more we'll never get more. Never be satisfied with anything, always demand more, don't be a burden on technology.
A man you may have heard of, William Henry Gates III once said "640K ought to be enough for anybody." And we see how well that held true over time. Now I sit here with 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. So do me a favor, think about the future, and what it may bring and don't make stupid, absurd statements, 6Mb is not fast enough and never will be anymore, and I honestly do not believe my 15Mb is fast enough, it was 2 years ago, but not in 2008.

| because it is plenty enough,any more than that just causes people to abuse,and tax their providers systems,all faster speeds do is cause people to download,download,download,and if you have comcast you just might find your self booted,but you all just wait all providers will have caps before long
If you don't have the patience for a 6mb connection you don't need to be on a computer,because the only time you gain anything from faster connections is when you are downloading.you cant tell a difference when browsing
give me a damn break you aught to be stuck with a 1mb connection with a 200mb download cap like me then you would appreciate that 6mb or 15mb connection | |

this is exactly what i have been talking about i live 2 1/2 miles from a town of 10,000 people.i have a house 300 feet from me on both sides and a house 1000 feet in front of me
dsl stops 1700 feet from me,and cable stops 1 1/2 miles from me,and they just keep putting millions into adding more speed to existing customers,and at&t cant spend a measly $3000 to add a dslam to add about 100 more customers.i hope they are charging plenty of money for faster connections,because they are loosing more and more voice customers everyday | |

The VAST majority of the folks use broadband to get email and share some files - even with large files 1.5 is plenty fast and most people do not use their connection to watch TV or download movies every day - all day.
As the population gets older - I do not expect the numbers to change to no-where near the majority any time soon.
Hell - my dad is still on dialup. Not one of my friends on the lowest DSL or cable have ever complained that their connection is to slow because they get email and do some searching. I had no issues working from home with a 1.5 meg down 384 up - even running the application I support and the server I connected to was in North Carolina.
Till the time there is the one or 5 killer apps that will need a ton of speed that the majority of the population needs - there is no need for faster speeds for the majority of the population. The new is still missing the killer app that no one can do without that takes a ton of bandwidth.
There has been no shortage of folks getting faster speeds and new technology being moved out but to say that 6 Mb is a mandatory miniumum is a joke. | |

I'm sure a DSLAM would cost at least 10 times that. Don't forget getting power to it, labor, concrete, and in some cases they have to purchase property.

It's called moving from a residential connection to a business class connection, where caps shouldn't apply. If Time Warner didn't want me to download at 15Mb, they wouldn't offer it. Me thinks you're just jealous.

1.5Mb is garbage, I take it you never had to download more than a month's worth of Updates on that stoneage of a connection.
You need to get the hell out of your fantasy world and realize there are plenty of people who do download HD video content, massive files like Linux ISOs, who VPN and Remote Desktop.

you could just as easily not have any more options than dialup sounds like you are farther out than me with half the population than the town i live in.if dialup or sat. was all you had you would have a piss poor attitude too,as much as you download it would kill you wouldn't it

all IM trying to say is they need to expand to all customer's first,before they add more speed where they already have plenty fast enough connections, if you don't like me saying that then OH well i don't care what you think,and i do pay 80.00 a month for a 1.5 connection that is completely ridiculous to pay that much a month for internet when i could be paying 14.00 a month for the same speed with at&t.so you just keep crying about slower than 15mb connections,and i will keep crying about being stuck in 1990 your opinion means nothing to me

caps are coming to everybody sorry dude ,but they are.you cant just keep downloading,and it not affect other users maybe you should try to pay for some of that HD video instead of stealing it off the Internet.your free ride is quickly coming to a end.we will see how much downloading you will do when time Warner boots you ,or you have to pay per mb,and no IM not jealous of a 15mb connection i just want a 1.5 or 3mb connection for a reasonable price i deserve that | |

to add as many as 100 customers,that's just a drop in the bucket.they already own most of the property the labor is from their workers,and less than a yard of concrete give me a break prices were cut in half for Dslam for at&t when they promised the fcc that they would have dsl for all their customers by 2007 | |
