Unless you play PC games, some of the patches developers push out can be as small as 10MB or as large as 300MB.

Bloom County		 I was a beta tester for America's Army - last install I had to down load was a gig - took 5-6 hours - did it over night. Most installs were at least 350 megs - took about 4 hours. No biggie and files that are 40-50 megs are less than 1 hour.
