 | That's why Linux was created I run no anti-virus with no Firewall on a 9-year old IBM ThinkPad 600x, WiFi-ing and all running with absolutely no protection. Never got anything.
Of course I run Ubuntu Linux
Friends run Windows and are always catching something.
I won't re-install Windows of any flavor for a friend but I'll always offer to install Linux, with Ubuntu being my first choice.
I use Windows, off-line for Gaming ONLY
I know, I'm opinionated but you should try leaving the virus, spyware and zombie botnets behind in the last century. Windows is so last week
Sincerely

 | If windows is last week, linux is so last century - Grow up and surf with the rest of the crowd - I use a firewall on the pc and a hardware one as well - Never had a virus - Even running wirelessly - Just gotta know how to surf - You can't fix stupid - |

| "..linux is so last century" Care to back up that rather bold statement? You seem to have been in the Micro$haft basket for too long. Wake up, smell the coffee beans... There are actually operating systems out there that don't require you to kiss away half yer RAM to bloated A/V software... |

Do you ride a motorcycle without a helmet? (Even if it weren't ILLEGAL to be that stupid).
Be interesting to see if Microsoft is even around in 10 years.
I don't surf "with the rest of the crowd" I don't drink coolaid, either.

Re: That's why Linux was created - Just adding a footnote... I was just browsing along with FireFox 3 on Ubuntu Linux and guess what happened?
I got the "Your computer is running too slow" and then the "Antivirus 2008" popups, finding multiple viruses and etc on my system. My LINUX system. lol
Got to give the perps of the "Antivirus 2008" credit for persistence. I had to force the Browser to quit to make the popups go away.
I shoulda clicked install just to see what would happen.
Of course, now that I think of THAT I can't remember where I was browsing to when I was hit.
Such things as that become amusements for "other than Windows OS" users like me...

 | A few thoughts from another ex-Windows user... If you have more than one tab open then there is no need to restart it Frank. Hold down the escape key to dismiss the recurring dialogue box, whilst you keep clicking the "close tab" cross. After a few clicks the offending tab disappears. Then you can carry on surfing as normal - with or without the crowd
If you do click the "install" button, then Foxy throws an error saying you need to be running MS Windows in order to install whatever malware they are trying to thrust upon you!. Seems these nasties simply will not run on Linux!
FWIW, we completely dumped Windoze in May 2007 in favour of Kubuntu Linux. Kubuntu c/w the amazingly powerful KDE desktop environment offered our users the most Windows-like interface whilst enjoying the excellent community support of Ubuntu. Since then, all our systems (many of which work round the clock and are permanently connected to the internet) have run 100% free of viruses, worms, spies, trojans, keyloggers & other malware.
Main reason for changing was our deep disappointment with MS Vista. However, the savings, both in terms of cost and hassle has made the decision very worthwhile indeed. Full story, if you are interested:- »www.garfnet.org.uk/joomla/conten···w/66/16/

 | I never tried Vista. Didn't like Windows XP enough to go further in the "nanny software" direction.
I hate system popups interrupting my thought flow with dumb questions like what do want to do with a mounted CD or FlashDrive. I'll get to it when I get to it.
Your "GarfNet" website is fascinating.
I've started installing ONLY Ubuntu, or another flavor of Linux if the friend wants it. I don't do windows, except for my Gaming PC at home and it's not connected to the Internet.
Nice to meet another non koolaid drinker.
