Splitpair : They don’t need to be drunk.

In late 2000 I walked into a travel agency off Sunrise Boulevard in NE Fort Lauderdale the trouble was a repeat and as always in that building it was the result of a perpetually unlocked electrical room that was a haven for illicit nighttime activity.

The owner was righteously pissed he’s in the travel business and if the phones are not ringing he’s not making money so he read me the riot act and once he finished I asked (since he didn’t recognize me) where’s your phone equipment? He directed me to the location and then went to the front and locked the only door which got my attention. I determined the main line that he called the trouble in on was working but as I moved lower on the 21X the remaining 11 lines got worse with the last two totally out of service and quite noisy. In this building such an indication usually meant the trouble was a 66 block installed at about urinal height that is now drying out in the electrical room the replacement of which is one reasons we carry lots of throw away rubber gloves.

I explained to the subscriber the trouble is outside and I need to go to the meter room to check it out. He exploded I mean flipping exploded and made it very clear he is not letting me leave until the trouble is resolved and resolved forever. I tried to explain I needed to trouble shoot outside (and get the heck out of there) but he wouldn’t budge and demanded that if I need help “outside” I needed to call my boss and get help which I sort of agreed to do. I placed my buttset on the first line dialed 911 listened until the operator answered and then set the still off hook buttset on top of the subscribers key system and told the guy “it’s busy but still if you don’t let me out of here I cannot fix your line” that and much more of "our" conversation was clearly heard by the 911 operator and my help did arrive quickly though sadly no lines where fixed that day as the owner suddenly had new commitments to deal with.

Wayne
--
If you cannot fix it with a buttset and some beanies you ain't a technician.
