Pixelation Woes

Was watching an HDTV channel today and noticed a lot of pixelation. This is not the first time but today it was bad. I went to another tv and turned on an SD channel and the same thing.

I called AT&T and they said no errors so everything was good on their end. I inquired about seeing 19200 on my network and they said yes I was on the 19200 and that was the one to be on. I have 3 HDTV's and 1 SD TV and 2 HD streams. I said it was odd that I was on the 19200 since I was just told last week by someone on Tier 2 Tech Support that I was on 25200. I posted in the AT&T Direct forum about a week ago and no reply. It would seem U-Verse is having some severe growing pains.

They are sending a tech next week. Joy. My house seems like a revolving door for technicians lately. I guess I will see what the tech says and make the determination on going back to Direct or Dish.

Do you use an HDMI cable? when we were having ours installed the guy said that on some of the cable boxes that the HDMI cables don't work well and you have to use Component cables(red, blue, green) instead, it happened on the one in my room where it got pixelated, but we just got a new HDTV in our family room and it is going just fine with the HDMI cable. So some work and some don't

OCNBLUE - I also have the same issue as you...I have 2HD/2SD but am on the 19.2mbs profile. I've tried to explain to Tech Support that I should be on the 25mbs profile but they don't seem to get it.

On my low profile I can get by watching 2HD and 1SD but when I try to do 2HD and 2SD I get extreme pixilation on one of the HD streams.

I've heard from others that your max sync rate needs to be >30mbs to get the 25mbs profile. My max is right at the cutoff 29.9mbs.

Have you gotten Att to up you to the 25mbs profile??

You guys definitely need to be on the 25mbps profile if you are on 2HD/2SD. The 19mbps profile is very new and it seems like they don't know how to deal with it yet. The proper profile for the 19mbps profile is 1HD/3SD. I'd try for the 25mbps profile first of course.

If you aren't having good luck with phone support, I suggest trying David over in AT&T Direct.

AT&T direct says I am on the right profile at 19/2 as does customer support. I have a tech visit today so we will see. Also one SD TV has a habit of getting stuck on an image and the audio just continues to play. AT&T has plenty of bugs to work out.

It seems like their FTTN is very limited. I have to give the nod to Verizon on this one. In 5 years they will dominate.

The only advantage Verizon has is the pipe.

Anyway, if you give me the account numnber, ill look at it.

Mine works fine, 2hd/2sd never have a problem.

Thanks Ape but not sure what more you could do. Below is David's reply from the direct forum. I had the same setup with Direct and had no problems. So it would seem that the bandwidth would be the issue here unless I am missing something.

Well I pulled up your stats. I can confirm your 19200/2048. you are on the 7330_19m_2m profile. Probably because your maxes (according to me) are 30912/3611. According to the VDSL/Vrad your loss was only 0.1% with a worst 15 minute average of just a little below 3%. You don't have any Loss of lines, no loss of power, and no reinitializations. technically if you are giving up 4/1 for the 2/2 you would lose the bandwidth of the 2 sd's and get 1 hd.

looks rather clean from everything i can see.

I'd like to take a closer look at it anyway. I have a little more I can do from this end. If you dont mind that is.

I believe apeface works in the U-Verse NOC and may have access to more tools and abilities to make changes than David would. Give it a shot. Worst case he gives you the same info while the best case is you get your problem resolved. For all the good he does to help others, David doesn't have access to all systems. We like to make him call people sometimes too

Out of curiousity, are there specific HD channels which are giving you problems? I have 2 HDTVs in the house and since the upgrades earlier this year to fix the codecs for the HD streams, my problems have gone away. FWIW, I have 1 on HDMI and the other on component.

Ape I pm'd the acct number.

wolverine - we are pretty much on a few channels only. Discovery, SciFi and anything kid oriented. I have recorded Deadliest Catch and have to fast forward past the pixelation areas. My two plasmas are on HDMI and my Rear Projection is component.

I don't understand what he's trying to say there. What the heck is 4/1?

From what I've read by other techs (and someone feel free to correct this if it's wrong), the 19m/2m profile is not enough to run 2HD/2SD. When on that profile you're supposed to get 1HD/3SD. The line profile and the TV profiles need to be properly matched up so they don't exceed the line's sync rate.

To apeface or other U-verse techs, do they allow other combinations, like 3mbps pro internet + 2HD/2SD? That would seem to fit in 19mbps as well. Just trying to understand what is and isn't possible so I don't give the wrong advice. Thanks!

There are only 2 profiles, not matter what you order.

Just an FYI -

The tech came out and replaced 2 coax cables that were bad from the dish install.

Apefaced changed my profile to the other one and I have not seen any issues as of yet! woohoo!

We will see how this goes and I will let everyone know. Thanks for the feedback and the help everyone.

Apeface can you hook me up as well on the 25mbs profile? I posted above that I have 2HD/2SD but am on the 19mbs profile. My max rate is usually around 29.9mbs which should have enough headroom for the 25mbs profile. Let me know and I can pm my account #...Thx

It does matter what you order, because 2HD+2SD+10mb internet is not going to fit in 19mb.

So my question is, if you're limited to the 19mb profile, what combinations of services can run on it?

I've got the 25mb 2hd/2sd tier, and I don't watch any HD channels (no HD service activated) since I don't have any decent displays. On a few of the movie channels (showtime, starz) I'm constantly seeing pixelation. Seems kinda ridiculous to see it on SD channels. This is, of course, before the entire U-Verse network died on me this morning

There are 2 profiles, 25/2 and 19/2. 25/2 is default on every line. 19/2 is for the ones with issues. Everything else is handled by QoS filters. If you have a crap line, they most likey arent going to let you order elite or max, but you can still get 2/2.

I cancelled my U-verse TV due to compression artifacts and pixelation on both SD and HD. My Comcast HD signal was clearly better in sports and action scenes, not perfect just better.

I contacted AT&T about the issue and they didn't seem to care and happily let me go. I'm on the 25mbit profile as well and have 10mbit MAX Internet.

AT&T is doing a lot of compression and using low bitrates on video to achieve 2SD and 2HD over the 19/25mbit channel. To get higher bitrates and better quality they'll need to go a higher profiles with VDSL. I'm across from the VRAD so my line can achieve much more, so if AT&T ups their quality I'll probably go back.
