[LOMAC] Lock-On simulator and NVIDIA drivers...

Hi,

I just completed building a new gaming computer and was having some fun running a few of my older games at their max settings. They definitely look much better with the new hardware. While playing around with Lock-On (Ubisoft) I found that as soon as I ventured beyond the "medium" graphics settings, the game would crash to the desktop when I launched a mission, with the message that the NVIDIA driver was no longer responding. A search of the issue revealed that Lock-On has a bit of history with NVIDIA drivers, but no solutions appeared to emerge. I am currently using the NVIDIA 175 WHQL drivers. Has anyone encountered this and figured out a work-around? No issues at all with any other games I've thrown at this system.

Thanks for any insight,

Ender

I've played that sim and truly enjoy it but never had this issue. I would try the new beta drivers, 177.79

Make sure to completely uninstall the old drivers, then install the newer ones and see if that helps. If that doesn't, have you tried posting in the Lomac forums to see if anyone over there has any ideas?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, after searching several LOMAC forums, I posted in two that had previous threads regarding texture and shadow issues with various NVIDIA drivers. Apparently, LOMAC and NVIDIA drivers above 60.xxx versions, don't always mix well with higher video settings, and textures and shadows will not map correctly. This results in all kinds of symptoms such as texture striping, phantom shadows, lock ups and crashing back to the desktop. The only current work-around appears to be to avoid selecting the higher video settings as Ubisoft has no interest in continuing to support LOMAC and NVIDIA understandably has no desire to explore an issue that does not involve a mainstream title.

Some users have installed a 60.xxx driver and then a newer 170.xxx driver and they use the driver roll back option to switch between them. I don't think I will travel that path, having seen the mess you can get into without cleaning out earlier versions before installing a new one. Many users have found that the game does behave quite differently with various drivers above the 60.xxx versions, so your suggestion to move on to something other than the 175.xxx version I have installed is a viable one, and I will probably do that just to see what happens.

Thanks again,

Ender

Ender, that's sad when you have issues such as you described above. You would think tht future versions of hardware and software would be more streamlined, but I guess that isn't always the case.

Yes, the thread at the official nvidia forum is pretty long regarding compatibility issues with LOMAC as well as a few other pre-directx 9 games and the 8800 and 9800 series cards.

However, I took your suggestion and installed the 177.92 beta drivers. They appear to be a successful attempt by nvidia at a uni-driver that reaches back to include the GeForce 6 - 9 series together, and they seem to be doing a much better job of handling older games. I can crank up everything in LOMAC to the max, except for shadows and heat blur. Everything else appears to work just fine, and it looks really nice. As a bonus, the one minor glitch that appeared in COD4 with the 175 WHQL drivers (a thin white outline around player models under some conditions) has been eliminated.

So, thanks for the tip about the new drivers! They made a huge improvement!

Glad to help at all. Speaking of Lomac, I kinda miss that game, plus the fact that I need to get a new joystick. The older MS one that I have is not working correctly. I lent out my Lomac game, and won't get it back as the guy who had it, moved. Maybe I'll find it in a bargin bin somewhere for like 10 bux.

Yah, it is one of those titles that is likely to show up in a bargain bin somewhere. I see that Amazon has it (new) for 20 bucks. There are used ones there as well for less, if you like to take the risky road!

I'm really enjoying messing around with the game and have downloaded a bunch of "help videos" to help me with some of the more obscure functions and to create a few missions. Looks like something you could get carried away with during the cold winter months!

Thanks, will look into getting it, as well as a replacement joystick. What do you recommend that isn't too expensive, yet decent? I miss the joystick feedback with my old MS

Ah, I would be the wrong one to ask. I am still using my trusty old Logitech Wingman Extreme, which is generations behind what is out there now. It still works fine, but I'm sure they have come a long way since it was made. So many toys, so little time! Happy shopping!

I've been using a Logitech extreme 3d pro for years and have no complaints.

I have a friend who is an amateur pilot and is addicted to flight sims who liked it so much that he has two. one is mounted to his desk, and the other travels to Lan parties. The one mounted to the desk is on it's third set of springs (gauge adjusted to more closly match the flight stick on his plane.)
