Frontier Offering AdrenaLine OSP xDSL Single Line ConditioniI live in an area that has NO DSL available (NW TN). My only option has been satellite (Hughes). Miserable, miserable service, but better than dial-up (I guess).
Anyway, yesterday, we received a letter from Frontier (not from the typical mass mailer - but directly from Frontier) that they had new equipment available that MIGHT allow us to get high-speed internet.
It's an AdrenaLine OSP xDSL Single Line Conditioning Unit.
Do you know anything about this unit? Does it work? I am waiting on Frontier coming to my location to "measure" and let me know if I qualify...
Supposedly, if I can have it, it'll be $44.95 + $3.99/mo. modem fee.
What do you think?
Thanks!

Well, that unit they installed based on finding a PDF on the internet is basically a DSL booster capable of using ADSL, ADSL2, and ADSL2+. But good luck and hope you can qualify! The DSL will be a lot better than the HuguesNet latency wise, and maybe even speed wise if your Hughes is as bad as the reviews say they are. |

Okay, so call me dumb...(but only behind my back, PLEASE ), but what's LATENCY? All I know about Hughesnet is that it is a miserable excuse for an internet connection! I have waited for the day when I dump it for something that's a real connection... I have friends who run their own business mostly on the internet, and when they come to visit us in NW TN, they HATE having to work off of Hughesnet. I was talking to another friend in the Chicago 'burbs (Bartlett) this afternoon...we both did speedtest.net - she had 2,500 down; I had 350 down. Grrrrrrr... |

Latency is the time in milliseconds that it takes for data to go from point A to point B. In an Echo Ping, Latency is the amount of time it takes for data to go from Point A, to Point B, and then return back. Go to www.speedtest.net and run a speed test. Your ping will show you what it is to see latency on satellite. DSL even during times of conjestion will have a lot better ping than your satellite will ever get, and that means of course pages will load faster if they have a lot of images or content on it. Not to mention, because there will be less latency, you won't have the TCP "burst" of data at the start of things, and then see speeds start to speed up afterwards. That would most like account for, despite HughesNet being known for having crummy speeds, your relative not liking to work off of your connection. Latency is key to the internet |

Well, the Frontier guy was here yesterday to install our DSL. He tried forever to install it without the AdrenaLine line conditioner, including running a dedicated line from the phone box on the outside of the house directly to the modem in the computer room, and also trying with both the newer technology modem and switching back to an older style modem. Speeds were consistently at 190kbps. He couldn't get it ANY higher. He finally gave up and drove to another town to pick up the AdrenaLine conditioner. After installing it on the line (halfway between my house and the CO), he came back to the house and VOILA - 1.1Mbps!!!!!! Took him 7.5 hours total! This morning, it's still wonderful! And FAST. He said, though, that lightening loves to strike those AdrenaLine line conditioners. We'll see, but so far, so incredible! What a difference from Hughesnet! So, rural Frontiernet customers, there is hope!!! I'm glad this guy didn't give up on me. And the call to dump Hughes was such a joy!!! Regards, Michelle |

enjoy FrontierNet and hope to see you arrive here some more! Otherwise, hope that the line conditioner doesn't get blown up by lightning, and you should be good to go. Mind posting up a speed test from DSL Reports along with a line quality test and a trace route for us? I'd like to see how things are working. Also, your line stats would be nice too to see what it's like behind the conditioner. |

Well, I'd love to, but I don't know how!!!! Sorry! Here's a speed test I just did today, I think: Sorry I didn't reply sooner, but I was camping out by the Grand Canyon for a while... |

That last post didn't quite read correctly. I KNOW I did the test today...what I was unsure about was posting the results!!! Duh on me! |

Pretty good results considering you had to get a line conditioner installed. Frontier still working out for you? |

Well, we're into Frontiernet for a couple of months now, and so far, so good! Speeds continue at 1.1Mb up and 160 down. Sure beats the heck out of Hughesnet!!! We're very happy. All for $15 less per month!
While I'm here - what does that 5Gb limit Frontier is about to impose mean in the real world? Can we still watch an occasional program online that Directv might have messed up?

The 5 gig cap means you can do anything you want to as you have done before, BUT if you go over the limit of 5 gigs of usage you will be charged for the extra gigabytes of data you have used. How much would that be? It's still up in the air but it's rumored to be $1-2 a gigabyte. You can read up more on the subject here.... » www.stopthecap.comThey say they will give the customer tools to monitor the usage when they roll out the CAP, but by that time i feel it will be to late for us to voice our concern. You can use this program to monitor your usage... » www.analogx.com/contents ··· /nsl.htmI as an average user use 10 gigabytes a month. I'm not happy about what is coming and i will be voicing my concern with my pocketbook. So as long as your under 5 gigs you have nothing to worry about, good luck staying under 5 gigs |

My average usage is about 2.5G a month. That is two kids playing online games, surfing, and youtube. I occasionally stream a TV show, but not much file downloading. The only time I went over (6G) was when I was building a new PC. |

Did they tell you how many feet your home was from the office? i just was informed by Frontier that this booster was available and have ordered it, they told i am almost 26,000 feet from the nearest office (4.9 miles)and i would most likely see connection speeds of 1.5mbs and if i am lucky 1.8mbs on a 3mbs system. so i was just wondering if they told you how far you are from your local phone sub station thanks Jim |
